Matt Uncovered - The Rarer Monro

Five years in the making it delivers exactly what it says on the cover. Stored in the vaults of EMI and the BBC for more than four decades this sees 50 + wonderful new tracks as well as a smattering of unearthed jingles that Matt recorded for some of the most prestigious products of the day.

Mike and John,
Thanks for your recommendation on the Singles collection. I don't know how I missed that one before. I've got about 80 % of the songs on the Singles Collection, but I ordered it from Amazon UK tonight (new). It's much less than buying it here on Amazon U.S., even with the shipping added and with the exchange for $. I've found this to be true with other things I've ordered, including some otther Matt items. There are about a half-dozen songs on The Singles box set that I don't have and that are real beauties that will make shelling out more sheckles worth it. (Good thing Matt is my only addiction!) And reading all the reviews, it seems that the entire remastered set might have some better sounds than some of the same recordings I've got on other CDs.

Robert, if you're reading this, Thank You too for recommending The Singer's Singer box set. Turns out, after checking, I have most of what's on there already (and you're correct, it's all great). In fact I haveall of what's on the first 3 discs. I'm only missing some of what's on #4.
The Singles Collection, though, has several Gotta Haves and some beautiies that I've never had, some I've never even heard, but have just heard the previews.

Thank you All!

Hi Lindy

Referring to your earlier reply to me, maybe the use of the word "hate" for recordings I dislike was a bit strong; let's just say there are some rendtions of Matt's that I don't like, just as there recordings by other favourite artists that I don't like, though I love most of them. My favourite Matt Monro recording if I was pushed to identify one (a very difficult task) would "Look For Small Pleasures", which I've only ever seen on the "Hollywood and Broadway" compilation, closely followed by "Wednesday's Child".

I have seen Matt's performance of "Maria" on the Live At the BBC, and very good it was, too.

Hi John,
Gee, "Look for Small Pleasures" is more treasure ahead of me, then. I've not heard it. I like the title, it sounds wise.
Something to look forward to. Oh, how wonderful Dear Matt was to give us so many treasures.
Thumbs up on "Wednesday's Child"! It's one of the many wistful-sounding recordings of Matt's, where we just know that he was singing from his heart/experiences (at least he makes it seem that way). Heck, when I hear it, I always think I should check the calendar of the year I was born, he convinces me I'm a Wednesday's child.
Today on the way to work, I had Matt on, singing "As Long As She Needs Me."
Sure sounded like his song for Mickie, and it's BEAUTIFULLY sung. That's another that I think he does better than anybody else.

The Day of the Week On Which We Were Born:

Ha! I just checked. I was born on Thursday. Pretty close to being a "Wednesday's Child".
If anybody else is curious and doesn't already know what day of the week they were born on, you can do so here, Franklin Institute Science site:

http://www.fi.edu/time/Journey/OnceUpon ... kbirth.htm

Matt was born on Monday, Dec 1 1930. He was further from Wednesday's Child than I am.
But I know he had plenty of days when he felt like Wednesday's Child.
Thank Goodness he also had Family and had many very happy days and nights and he knew he was loved, too!

 Aww, Marian. I'm sorry. Well, I was born late on a Thursday night, which means I'm almost a Friday's child, so I'll help you! At least we have Matt! :)

[quote="jon"]Hi Lindy
My favourite Matt Monro recording if I was pushed to identify one (a very difficult task) would "Look For Small Pleasures", which I've only ever seen on the "Hollywood and Broadway" compilation, closely followed by "Wednesday's Child".

Hi Jon,
I apologize for spelling your name wrong on the last post. With John and Jon here, I need to be more careful.
But I'm writing this morning to tell you THANK YOU for putting me on to "Look for Small Pleasures"! I found a used (Very Good, in the UK) copy of the "Hollywood and Broadway" CD, and grabbed it. After you ID'd this song as one of your favorites (tough to do, yes!) of Matt's, I checked my faithful Youtube friends, and someone had posted Robert Ghouuuuuuuuuuulaaaaaay's version of it (my sister and I find his singing very susceptible to mimicry, as has Will Ferrell). Having heard Goulet's version, I know I'm going to LOVE LOVE LOVE Matt's! It's a beautiful song, one to live by. I'm grateful to you (and this forum, Michele, Richard) for your help in my Treasure Hunt. These are more than small pleasures. :D
P.S. Robert Preston must have done a superb job on Broadway as Ben in the play that featured this song. The play was "Ben Franklin in Paris". Preston was so great in "Music Man" and in "Victor Victoria", two of my all time favorites. Robert didn't sing as beautifully as Matt, but he sang with heart and soul and just captivates. I hope you've all seen/heard these. Oh, and Ronny Howard (Opie from Andy Griffith Show) and now one of America's finest film directors, was unforgettable in the Music Man movie with Robert, as well. When two individuals can make a song about "Gary, Indiana" (of all places) memorable, that's MAGIC!

Hi Robert! How are things in beautiful Yorkshire today? What a beautiful part of the world.
No, I ordered a used copy of Hollywood and Broadway, from a UK private seller on Amazon US (convuluted process, but I've had good luck doing this). Don't you think Matt would be tickled to see us all scurrying around like big-eared mice, seeking his songs here and there and everywere?
"This is my quest, to follow that star...." (like Matt sings that one, also the very BEST!)
