Hi Rob,
It's good to make your acquaintance. Thanks for your recommendations.

Here's another of my most revered:

Marvin Gaye, What's Going On, Universal Motown

Lindy , Did you know Bing Crosby's Christmas Classics was originally released as "I Wish You A Merry Christmas" on Warner Bros in 1962.

Also "What's Going On?" was on Tamla which was a Motown subsidary. :D

Earth Wind & Fire - Gratitude - Columbia 1975. Saw them on tour that year and this lp was their live set minus Side 4 which was studio recordings

Robert! Hello! You beat me to Jim Reeves!
Awesome!
I know Jim Reeves from non-Christmas music though, we listened to him constantly in my early years.
But i don't think I ever heard his Christmas album. Now I have to!

"Yonder comes a sucker", love that song! "Blue Side of Lonesome", et al. Best voice in REAL American country music ever. I love Johnny Cash, admire him so much for so many reasons, but Reeves' voice was, well, Reeves was the Matt Monro of American country music, for perfect pitch and enunciation. Beautiful singer, timeless.
I've got investigate his Christmas collection, thanks so much Robert. :D

Yeah I love Jim Reeves' Christmas Album. It's a staple every holiday around our house along with Bing Crosby , etc..though my Christmas lp will always be and my siblings and I say Christmas isn't Christmas in our house without this playing is:

The Partridge Family - A Partridge Family Christmas Card - 1971 Bell. The U.S. version came with a Christmas Card in a Partridge envelop complete with facsimle signatures...that was worth more to me than the lp!! LOL

IRT JIm Reeves, my Dad played his albums constantly also. I didn't like his early stuff like "Bimbo" but when he did "He'll Have To Go" wowza blew me away. He's just got one of those comforting voices like Matt and Val Doonican!! I put it this way with these singers, it's like your Dad, Uncle or Grandfather singing to you to comfort you!! That's why I love Matt, Val and Jim.

Hi Eman,
Gee I wrote a reply to you earlier, and it's not posted. I must've bolo'd it somehow.
Anyway, I responded that the '62 version of Bing's Christmas has 12 of the songs, but in 77 they added two delights": Patapan/While Shepherds Watched (a lovely old madrigal) and the unforgettable duet with David Bowie, from a TV Christmas special in the 70s, "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" . That video of Bing/Bowie is on Youtube. Again, it's good year round.

I have the Deluxe version of Marvin Gaye's prophetic "What's Going On"....he saw what was coming all over America, not just Detroit. But he told his vision with such beautiful music. This Deluxe was issued by Universal Motown with some bonus tracks and alternate versions of songs. You must have What's Going On, too?

Wow! Never knew this existed! What fun! My sister and I enjoyed the TV show, we just never got around to their music outside of the show (economy, I guess). Cute about the Christmas card. You guys are great!

LIndy,
Yeah, Pat-A-Pan/While Shepherd's Watch Their Flocks was on the 1962 lp. I loved the Bing Crosby/David Bowie medley. Growing up my siblings laughed at the special and said if my Dad and I ever sang together it would be Crosby and Bowie because we are complete oposites.

Yep, I've got What's Going On, from the 1st pressing in 1970 and also the remasted 2 cd set. Really a cool album and thought provoking!!

The Partridge lps always came with something because their albums were named after household items.. like "album" for photo album and came with a 8x10, "up to date" a calendar and had a free book cover. Yet the coolest novelty was the Shopping Bag, the American one had a free plastic shopping bag inside. The UK one had the handled affixed to the jacket so you could actually carry the lp like a bag!!

Apologize for being such a record nerd!!

You are not a nerd, you are an EXPERT, Eman.
You could open a popular music museum with your treasures and knowledge.

I'm glad you got to collect those things yourself (rather than have to buy them second hand and as uncared for "antiques").
They mean more this way.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, and You Too, Robert, on Jim Reeves' Christmas.

P.S. I just went and looked for Jim Reeves Christmas, and found some on Itunes. I listened to "Mary's Boy Child", and surprisingly, I was disappointed....BECAUSE.....I have heard bits of MATT singing this song, and we can't buy it, as far as I've been able to find out. I want it badly by MATT! The bits I've heard of Matt singing "Mary's Boy Child" are sung better (perfect pitch) than the one I just listened to by Jim.

Goodnight!

Lindy, you are so right. On the albums that were bought or I bought first hand, I probably could tell you what I was wearing that day and what I did..LOL To me my records are like a photograph album to some. I do buy second hand albums also, but they just don't have that sentimental value as I wasn't the first owner. Just a pet peeve I guess.
