transcription disc is usually for promoting

Some radio items may have survived in overseas archives as the BBC ran a Transcription Service. This service sent LP discs to overseas radio stations – some of which may be in private hands, but none have come to light so far. Matt even made some programmes specifically for the Transcription Service, which have never been broadcast in the UK. Rumour has it that the BBC still has the majority of the transcription service masters which are sitting un-catalogued at Bush House (Home of the World Service). Time will tell if this is true.

Transcription discs were not promotional items, they were actually recordings for broadcast overseas. It was normal to send discs out rather than tapes as tape was quite expensive. A mixture of material was issued on these discs, sometimes recordings of programmes broadcast in the UK and sometimes material recorded especially for the overseas market.

The above (mainly from my Missing Media article) is now only partly true (please give credit when you quote please Yari).

I have recently researched the whole transcription service question and with the help of BBC worldwide now have a complete picture of everything they issued by Matt and unusually all of it does still exist! (Whilst the transcrition archive is not complete a great deal of material survives and the British Library also have 12,000 transcription discs in their collection!)

No poison needed Yari! Sorry if it sounded cross, not my intention.

Well, Ed and Gray - maybe! There does happen to be an "At The BBC" set in the works - see the news section for further details (such as they are at this stage) Nothing is confirmed at this stage.

I hope you have all been enjoying the releases Michele and I have been putting together. Whilst we don't have a limitless supply of material we do have a few things up our sleeve and continue to look for new things.

Richard

Don't take poison Yari - just watch some more 'heartbeat'!

More fascinating news Richard - - its great to think that there is still more 'unheard' Matt out there!
