Barbra's New Release of Previously Unreleased Recordings

Post by LindyG » Sun Sep 02, 2012 12:16 am

Received notice from Amazon that a new Barbra Streisand CD comes out in October, cutely titled "Release Me."
All recorded in her prime and previously unreleased. Quite a lineup! Platinum in its first week of release, maybe?

1. Being Good Isn't Good Enough (from Hallelujah, Baby!)
2. Didn't We (So glad we have this from Matt, two versions. :-) )
3. Willow Weep For Me (Billie Holliday and Chad & Jeremy recorded this. Love the C&J.)
4. Try To Win A Friend
5. I Think It's Going To Rain Today (One of the beauties on Neil D's "Stones" that I posted as one of my favorite CDs.)
6. With One More Look At You (from A Star Is Born)
7. Lost In Wonderland
8. How Are Things In Glocca Morra? / Heather On The Hill (from Finian's Rainbow / Brigadoon. WOWEE!)
9. Mother And Child
10. If It's Meant To Be
11. Home (from The Wiz) (I LOVE this song as recorded by Stephani Mills.)

Lindy,
My Mom will be jazzed about this one as she's a mega Striesand fan!! I wasn't too impressed with the last cd. But if she sings "Home" from The Wiz, I'm so there. I loved that song, and Stephanie Mills' version!!! I used to listen to it all the time when I was in the Philippines and wanting to come back to my life here in the US. That song along with "Can't Go Home Again" by David Cassidy. This song was co-authored by Kim Carnes and Dave Ellingson.

My soul-brother, Eman, yes, that song has the same profound meaning to both of us who have been exiled.
I'm glad you're HOME now. :D And I'm glad you can give your Mom good news. :D
I still yearn (like George Costanza).

About these Barbra recordings.....they span past decades, when her voice was in it's incredible prime. I"m guessing many if not all of these will be superb (knowing what a perfectionist she famously always has been).

Oh yes, that song "Home" has the same meaning for me that it does for you. I know you don't like Michael Buble and that's cool as we are all different, but I like his composition called "Home" and Westlife an Irish Boy Band (now broken up) had covered it. I use to listen to that song on my travels especially when I got stuck and had to stay the night in a strange hote because of a cancelled flight until the next day to catch my flight home. I know I'm a little softie at heart.. Ha ha, but arent' we all.

I just told my Mom and she's all smiles, and says well you know what's on your bucket list for October. Hopefully right on time for her birthday which is that month!!!

Perfect! Perfect for Mom and perfect for you that you've already got some birthday bizness taken care of. :-)

Then you need to start your Christmas list.

Wow, Wow, Wow--I had not heard about this yet---I have quite a shopping list for Amazon already--but Barbra is top of my list--followed by Scott Mackenzie,

Thanks for the track listing Lindy-although I would have got o
it anyway--cannot wait to hear her sing the songs from "Brigadoon "

I did not recognise all the songs, but I remember hearing Johnny Mathis sing "Try to win a friend" many many times in concert, and it was always emotional when he sang--"Just go home and cry your eyes out, you'll only feel a little better"--and I do believe that song was written by Larry Gatlin.

But it sounds fantastic !!

I have an old 45 of Barbra singing Corner Of The Night which has never made it on to an album, too bad this new cd also did not include her French version of Evergreen from A Star Is Born.

She must have a stack of unreleased tracks in the vaults?

I'm sure she has--I am also sure that many other singers have.

I have the French version of Evergreen , plus I think it is an italian version of a song from "A star is born"

What are the tracks on Marian an LP or what? I have never heard the French version but my US friend told me about it years ago.

I do wonder why, if the tracks were recorded in a singer's prime (same with a new release of a Johnny Mathis album from the 60s), WHY they have never been released before.

Jon that is one of life's great mysteries.

We have just had several unreleased tracks from Matt and some years ago we had a load of unreleased tracks from Dusty that had lain in vaults for about 30 years and I have enjoyed them all - all I can say is thank you to the many people concered who fought tooth and nail to get them released.

Artists in the 50's & 60's (and to a lesser extent in the 70's) often recorded far more material that was required for a project. They would then cherry pick the material and reserve others for possible b sides etc - In some cases it's not always the best material chosen, but that which fitted a project. They could have gone back and used material on the next LP perhaps, but by then they would be itching to record new material and the left over material would be forgotten.

There is a LOT of good unreleased material out there that is just sitting there waiting to be re-discovered. The only problem is that unless you're prepared to do the research then that's where it will stay as record companies don't think that such projects in this day and age are commercially viable. The biggest problem of course is that the big record labels don't employ many people with knowledge of any recording more than 5 years old which is a shame.

How true Richard.

Back in the 60's & 70's I sometimes used to write to Philips Records regarding Dusty, I would get replies back from either David Shrimpton or Leon Campadelli and promptly at that. I also received complimentary albums from the same company in Australia and Germany and also United Artists in Los Angeles kindly sent me a 12" single of Dusty - a track that was only released here on an album. I also remember the name of the guy who sent it, Skipper Greer!

Nowadays Record companies don't even bother replying.

Thank you to all those guys, it was very much appreciated.

I love Lou Rawls singing Williow Weep For Me, I will take an online listen to Babs when the tracks are available. I haven't bought her cd's for awhile as I did not enjoy her recent releases.
