SCOTT MACKENZIE
SCOTT MACKENZIE
Scott Mackenzie, singer of "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hiar)" has died at the age of 73. This was one of the biggest hots of the 60s (no 1 in the UK) and an anthem of the Flower Power era, as well as one of my favourite songs from that decade. RIP, Scott.
Re: SCOTT MACKENZIE
I bought his record years ago and still love it but I honestly thought he had died many years ago!

Wow shocked to hear this. Great singer and filled in for Denny Doherty when the "New Mamas and Papas" were refromed years ago.

We also have this record. This recording had a big impact here in the Seventies. Very sad to hear this news.

I also have the song in French by Johnny Hallyday, I always like to hear a well known song in another language and i'm a big JH fan anyway.

Re: SCOTT MACKENZIE
For anyone who lived through that era, that song and the Mammas and Pappas hits simply transport you there-instantly.

I've just realised it wasn't Scott McKenzie I thought had died years ago it was Oliver of Good Morning Starshine fame, he passed away in 2000.

Such an iconic song from the flower power age

Yes, Robert. The very best iconic song.
That was a beautiful gift of Love, from John Phillips, writing that song and giving it to his friend Scott to fly with it. And did Scott ever soar, and we with him! May every generation hear that song and always know what a gift to the world it was and is.
Thanks, Jon, for posting this in memory of Scott Mackenzie, John Philips, Peace, Love, and all who have given their all not for war, but for peace and enlightenment.

Re: SCOTT MACKENZIE
Did you know Scott McKenzie filled in for Denny Dorehty in "The New Mamas and Papas" along with Spanky McFarlane (from Spanky and Our Gang) for the late Cass Elliot and daughter Mackenzie Phillips for Michelle. They didn't last long.
Re: SCOTT MACKENZIE
Hi Eman, I don't think I ever heard any of Scott and Spanky as the New M&P. Seems like they would have made some beautiful music together, but maybe it just wasn't a blend that worked.Eman wrote:Did you know Scott McKenzie filled in for Denny Dorehty in "The New Mamas and Papas" along with Spanky McFarlane (from Spanky and Our Gang) for the late Cass Elliot and daughter Mackenzie Phillips for Michelle. The M&P were just so beautiful, tough act to follow.
I always found it perplexing that we didn't have more popular ones from Scott, with that fine voice. Maybe he didn't like The Biz?
Re: SCOTT MACKENZIE
Lindy, the New M&P were out in the late early to mid 80's I believe. Though they never really caught on. I guess people wanted the real thing. However they were pretty good. Scott and Spanky were perfect to replace Denny and Michele. I hold a soft spot for the M&P's beause as a child my Mom bought me my first M&P lp called "Deliver" the one with "Dedicated to the One I Love" and "Creeque Alley". I always liked Cass's song the best.
Do you remember those dolls called "Show Biz Babies"? They were like "Polly Pockets" or "Kitty Kiddles" mini sized dolls. Well I had them of the M&P's, Beatles, and Monkees. Lost them all though. They were ugly as sin, but hey we weren't picky as kids, were we? Not like the kids of today. Gee I'm sounding more and more like my own folks..
Scott McKenzie had another minor hit with "LIke An Old Time Movie" from the San Francisco lp. He also covered "Twelve Thirty" by the M&P's". See out that lp or cd if you can it's a winner.
