How about "Lea Salonga"--I am sure she is from the Phillipines--I have all her cds and dvds---and saw her in "Miss Saigon"--twice !

She mostly sings songs from the Musicals--but she had a really lovely single out called "The Journey"--such a lovely song.

Mariana, yes, she is from the Philippines. I remember seeing her on tv when she was just a little girl. Now she's doing all these musicals. She is an awesome talent and one of the few to break into the international market. Hmm other notable singers with a Filipino lineage are Apple D' App from the Black Eyed Peas and Bruno Mars.

Lea's brother is very talented too-Gerard, I think his name is--I have seen him on the dvds-but he keeps more in the background.

Lea Salonga was in the 25th Anniversary of Les Miserables, and has also been in the stage show.

Yes Marian, she was--I had forgotten that.

I would think that the latest cd is probably an import, that is why it is so expensive-I bought a lot of her stuff from Ebay.

Just checked Amazon, and it is available for download the whole album for only £7.49, so I will probably do that later---I had not realised there was a new cd available.

Mariana, Lea's brother Gerard is a conductor/arranger/producer and yes he's behind the scenes.

OOO LIndy, smooth as silk Marvin!!! Love it.

Listening to another Filipino singer:

Martin Nievera - Take 1. - This is the guy who had the hit with "Be My Lady" in the Philippines. Unfairly they promoted his version instead of Matt's. Though, and I am not being biased, Martin's version is strained and you can hear and tell by listening to the last verse where the bridge goes up half a step. Matt's version sounds cool, relaxed and natural and for me has the better interpretation of the song. I guess Martin's version was promoted to appeal to the teen audience at the time.

Martin Nievera is a good singer when he wants to be and writes some good songs. However he does have a few clunkers here and there.

That's right, Robert. And when Matt sang "Maria" yesterday, I closed my eyes and heard your favorite part and yes, you're right, it is magical and I wished too that it would go on forever.
