What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
As you know, like Marian and Karl, I am a Jack Jones fan, even though I have not yet seen him live---but I am surprised how few people [in Uk], know his name---I know so many people--but only one of them knows the name of Jack Jones---is that maybe because he is never on TV--I do not know !

Are they younger people that don't know JJ Marian? That doesn't surprise me as he is never on tv anymore and his records are hardly ever played on the radio infact I could not tell you the last time I heard him on radio. It seems he is the forgotten man!
Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
NO Karl, they are all people of my age---people I have known for many years, via WI, neighbours, workfriends, even JM friends, etc--but no-one younger. He was on David Jacobs show a while back, but apart from that -nothing !!

I have never known a single Jack Jones fan in the United States. Or, to quote Jon, I've never known anyone "who would admit to liking Jack Jones"....mariana44 wrote:As you know, like Marian and Karl, I am a Jack Jones fan, even though I have not yet seen him live---but I am surprised how few people [in Uk], know his name---I know so many people--but only one of them knows the name of Jack Jones---is that maybe because he is never on TV--I do not know !

Honestly though, I've never met a Jack Jones fan. The first time anyone suggested to me that Jack Jones was great was Karl, then Mariana, and then Marian. Never thought I'd get "Jack Jones'd" three times on the Matt Monro forum!!

Believe me, I've tried to listen to JJ. I tried again yesterday when Marian suggested "Windmills".
And in my ear, JJ is far down the spectrum from Matt's constantly perfect pitch, lyrical interpretive skill and exquisitely rich beautiful tone. For me, one is torture,

Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
Woke up to Disc 3 of Matt's "The Complete Singles Collection".
Now it's just the birds singing outside my window for a while.
Birdsong is the only act that can follow Matt, I find.
Yesterday I very much enjoyed, twice through, the exquisite Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits , BMG, 2000
...along with several Youtube offerings that we discussed on here. Highlight of the bunch was Joan Jett's, lowlight was Jack Jones' "Windmills'.

I have to say that "Windmills of your mind" is one of my least favourite songs ever-no matter who sings it.

Good one, Mariana.
To think that it won an Oscar for Best Song in '68.
But that wouldn't be the first time that the Oscars awarded a song that made a lot of people shout,
"WHAT?!?!"

I do think that Noel Harrison did it as unoffendingly as it could be done.
What a contrast, as songs go...."I've got Matt singing "The Music Played" right now. I so love this!

Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
I'm with Mariana here, I don't particularly like "Windmills".
I know plenty of JJ fans over here and in the States Lindy. I've seen him twice in Palm Desert, and he has just finished a stint in Las Vegas, and is to tour here in May next year. He comes over every eighteen months or so and have seen him live each time.
I think we shall just have to differ in our opinion on this one.

Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
LOL Lindy, as they joke when people listen to Rick Astley (I like hin) they say "You've Been Rick Rolled", but in this case I'll coin a new phrase, "You've been Jack Jumped". LOL.. It's good to share differences in opinions on singers, you either like em' or you don't and in this case it's a good natured exchange of opinions.
.. Though when people of my age group hear the name Jack Jones they think of The Love Boat theme song and the disco record of it he put out.

Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?

Good one, Eman. "Jack Jumped"........ his fans should wear uniforms that say,
"We Jump for Jack. Have you been Jack Jumped today?"!!

Seriously, no offense intended Marian and Mariana. I'm sure JJ has recorded and performed beautifully. I do believe you, you are music lovers.
LOVE BOAT?! I always hated that! That was him, Eman?! I'd forgotten that he sang that, but there we go AGAIN!

Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
Lindy:
*sings* Love, exciting and new, come aboard, we're expecting you, THE LOVE BOAT, soon we'll be making another run...
Listening to "Freedom Suite" by The Rascals with the PLEA FOR PEACE anthem "People Got To Be Free".

Hey, Eman, that's some good music I haven't heard in a while. Thanks for bringing it up. The Rascals'
"People Got to be Free" was/is a good 'un. Belongs on a compilation with Matt singing "Born Free" and Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come".
We can title it, "Songs for Eternal Optimists"
And play it every Sunday night before starting another week on the chain gang...
I actually lost $400 by going to work last week and having my car vandalized behind the building while I was on the chain gang.

LOL.. Lindy the back to work song.."Chain Gang" by Sam Cooke or "Bang On The Drum All Day" by Todd Rundgren..LOL.. Though I like my job, sometimes I just wanna chuck it all and go to the beach or hang out at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla just to watch the fish swim around and listen to my ipod!! LOL
Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
Marian, Jack was on TV a lot in the 70's so it's surprising those people do not know himmariana44 wrote:NO Karl, they are all people of my age---people I have known for many years, via WI, neighbours, workfriends, even JM friends, etc--but no-one younger. Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
Hey Robert,
People in my age group probably never heard of him until The Love Boat song. I knew of him and just thought JJ was just ok. I did like a few of his 70's songs.
