What can you pay with -

1p - for any amount not exceeding 20p
2p - for any amount not exceeding 20p
5p - for any amount not exceeding £5
10p - for any amount not exceeding £5
20p - for any amount not exceeding £10
50p - for any amount not exceeding £10
£1 - for any amount
£2 - for any amount

The rules for notes:

You can pay any amount in bank notes but:

. Bank of England notes are not legal tender in Scotland or Northern Ireland
Scottish and Northern Irish banknotes are not legal tender in England and Wales
.
But while shops are under no obligation to take Scottish or Northern Irish notes in England and Wales (and vice versa), as the Bank of England explains in practice you may well have no problems at all using them....

Marian don't worry, you will have no problem using Bank Of England notes up here.

In M&S we took any currency as the tills are geared for anything.

What Marian means Marian(a) is you cannot pay for goods with more than the amount she specified, i.e. you could not pay a £20 bill in 1 Pence coins.

I read this earlier in the year and it was interesting as I never realised that.

Karl--Marian did not mention a £20.00 bill-or £20.00 at all--it was 1p up to 20p--and I have a vague recollection from years back that it was a bus fare, but could now also include train fares. Or I could be wrong !

Yes I read that if you attempted to buy something of a certain value using lots of small denomination coins the sale can be refused.

I know it seems strange considering how mamy stores are closing down but it will lbe too time consuming to count all the coins.

One Halloween a customer came to me with 75 fun bags of sweets for trick or treat gifts

I have totally misunderstood this question--I thought that "What can you pay with" was a question---I think if it had said "What you can pay with"--I think I may have got it !!

Strangely enough, I have just read a story on AOl. about a shopper who wanted to pay her £100.00 shopping bill in Asda--and the assistant refused. The assistant suggested that she went to the machine that takes cash, and issues vouchers---but you never get back what you pay in-they keep some as commission.

So the shopper asked to see the manager--who duly came along , apologised, and gave a a £15.00 shopping voucher as compensation--because as we all know [now] it is perfectly legal to pay any amount with £2.00 coins.

I obviously was thinking of something else. But I have it now--it makes more sense than what I was thinking !!
