Who's The Best Bond

Post by karl » Fri Sep 07, 2012 6:06 pm

The debate has started up again about who is the best James Bond.

I don't have a particular favourite as I think they all brought their own personality to the role. but if I was rating them I would put Roger Moore last.

I know George Lazenby was considered the worst by the critics but that is one I have not watched so I can't give an opinion.

Sean Connery.
I enjoyed the film that George Lazenby was in, I avoided it for many years but saw it quite recently. I thought it was a good story, with a surprise ending.

I don't feel particularly partisan about this as I'm not a die-hard Bond fan; I just enjoy the films when I see them like everyone else. However, I guess Sean Connery will top the poll (I think I saw something on the cover of the "Radio Times" about this in the last week). Honor Blackman rated him the best and placed Pierce Brosnan 2nd, in her view. I think Daniel Craig is doing a good job, though. While I liked Roger Moore I feel he's the odd one out as he played the part noticeably more comically than the others.

Like Marian, I feel George Lazenby's performance in OHMSS was underated at the time compared to Seans films. However, the action sequences in my mind in the film have been the best in the whole series. The 2nd unit cameraman shot the ski sequences skiing backwards on one leg. The music by John Barry was his most complex score because he used a moog synthersizer for the first time blended into his horns and sting themes. He once commented that the score was over-scored! Louis Armstrong's song " We have all the time in the World" was recorded when he was seriously ill and was the last song he sang before his death in 1970.Both Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig have taken Fleming's raw exterior of Bond as depicted in the books to the limit but, Sir Roger Moore has always taken a more sauve approach with a hint of humour. The whole series has it's place in 'Movie History'.Thunderball and From Russia with Love stand out for me.

I do LOVE On Her Majesty's Secret Service, such a great action film, for me, it's in the top three Best Bond films.

Sean Connery :" Kissing you Miss Moneypenny is like sucking porridge through a straw"!! A line from a comedy single I bought in the 70's called Bond is a four letter word.

Maybe because they don't hold your interest much Marian, I am not mad on them but they're good escapist fun and you always get a laugh with the innuendo's

Karl and Gray, Some American comedian. I remember the other side was a sketch about American Police Shows which actually entered the top 30 singles chart at the time. I must have it in my collection somewhere but the name escapes me. Similar to the Driving Instructor sketch by Bob Newhart.

Roger Moore was always my favourite, probably because he always added a sort of comical touch. :) I am not a huge follower of the Bond films, but if there is one on TV and it has Roger Moore has Bond then I tend to watch it.
