What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
I was hoping to keep any further discussion about Jack to his "other artistes" page, which Michele has reminded us where other artistes should be discussed, but as he's come up again with the old Love Boat comments I would just like to say this, it is unfair to
dismiss out of hand fifty plus years in the music business on one song's reputation, which has come in for a lot of stick over the years, especially in America.
Back to "Other Favourite Artists"!!

True Marian!
It's really early here in the U.S. and I'm up one hour before I should wake up, so I'm just listening to Gordon Lightfoot - Old Dan's Record on ta-da cassette!!!!

Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
Quite a lot of things being discussed here:
- Windmills Of Your Mind: I like this song but I think it's stretching things a bit, Lindy, to say Noel Harrision "sings" it; he just talks his way through it, doesn''t he? It's interesting that Dusty S recorded "Windmills" even though she didn't like the song at all; I'm sure there must be other artists who sing material they don't like for commercial or other reasons.
- Jack Jones: I can't say I've ever made any effort to listen to JJ so can't comment on his merits as a singer (wasn't his father a singer called Alan Jones?) but he's most well known in the UK for Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers", I guess. He was in fact on a programme a few weeks ago on BBC4 about Bacharach's music but I can't remember what he was singing. A former work colleague of mine who used to sell old records at car boot sales once told me that he "couldn't even give away" his backlog of old Jack Jones albums, let alone sell them, such was people's lack of interest in them.

I agree with Marian too, it's very sad to think nobody is interested in JJ's records, when you listen to his very early material and compare it to his later work his voice and style matured to a greater level.
Not crazy on Windmills or Love Boat either but can appreciate a good performance.
I wanted to be able to sing like either Jack or Placido Domingo, it didn't happen!

Mariana, that is true. I've seen copies of the lps "What I Did For Love" and "With One More Look At You", going any where from $15 -$50. The $50 is a still sealed mint copy. There is a market for his music out there.

Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
David Alexander at the moment, another really great singer who left us far too soon.

John I did not know he had died, I take it it's the same guy who recorded If I Could See The Rhonnda One More Time?

The Rhondda Valley Marian.
David Alexander was welsh and had a fine voice, very similar to Tom Jones but more mellow in my opinion.
Yes, he died in 1995 Karl aged just 56. He also made another Rhondda song, "Come Home Rhondda Boy" which is even better than the first one, also another song "Please Send Me Daffodils (My Wales), but also sang a lot of other great songs.
