THE SMELL OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE ROAR OF THE CROWD
THE SMELL OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE ROAR OF THE CROWD
I expect some forumites are already familiar with this musical but I've only just really become acquainted with it. I like several of the songs, including, of course, "Who Can I Turn To?" (covered later by Matt), "What A Wonderful Day Like Today", and "The Joker", among others. The most well known, though, is "Feeling Good", famously later covered (some would say definitively) by Nina Simone, and by rock group Muse, all of which are worthy interpretations in their own way. I wasn't really that familiar with Anthony Newley before this but he had a good voice and wrote (along with Leslie Bricusse) some memorable songs.
Re: THE SMELL OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE ROAR OF THE CROWD
Anthony Newley wrote more songs than a lot of people realise, as did Leslie Bricusse.
I was always a fan of Anthony Newley, he had a sound that was all his own.

Goldfinger is perhaps his best known song written with LB (lot s of people think it was composed by John Barry!) I have a demo of Newley singing the song with very minimal accompaniment, very different!
The show is actually the other way round it's "The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd".

I have heard that Newley version, Richard.
It certainly is different to the Shirley Bassey version!

Strangely enough, I did not know that they had written "Goldfinger" and I have certainly never heard Anthony Newley sing it, although I have quite a few of his cds.
But I do know that they were very prolific, and lots of our most popular songs have come from either or both of them.

It was only released on a James Bond compilation in 1992 - Don't know if it's been released anywhere else
It can be heard here:-

Re: THE SMELL OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE ROAR OF THE CROWD
Hi Richard
Thanks for the correction. How silly of me to get the title of the show wrong.
It's not clear to me, though, whether Leslie Bricusse wrote the words or the music for Goldfinger (the song) - Wikipedia says John Barry wrote the music; his own website describes him as both a composer and a lyricist, and I also wonder what the division of duties between words and music there was between him and Anthony Newley on "The Roar of The Greasepaint, The Smell of The Crowd" (did he, for example, write the words to "Feeling Good", while Newley wrote the music, or the other way round?). He certainly would have written the music for, say, Dr Doolittle as only he is credited for that but he must have written the words for "Two For The Road" as surely the music for that song must be by Henry Mancini, who was of course a composer. And it would appear he wrote the words to "You Only Live twice", for which, again, Wikipedia says John Barry wrote the music. Or am I taking this all too seriously? Oh dear, my head hurts...

Thanks for the link Richard-that explains why I had not heard it before.

I have to admit I'm now confused too! I will find out!
Re: THE SMELL OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE ROAR OF THE CROWD
Thanks Richard.What an understated version.
I was a big Anthony Newley fan too Marian. He came in the record shop I worked in once.Stars of the day used to come in to the shop and you queued up to have their latest record signed on a sticker on the single.Mine was 'WHY' but I tried to peel it off to put in my autograph book and ruined it!!
I also bought 'And The Heavens Cried' and 'If She Should Come To You' on singles.
The only CD I have is The Very Best Of which you have reminded me to listen to again

Re: THE SMELL OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE ROAR OF THE CROWD
I first saw him in "Idle on Parade"--but I also know that he played The Artful Dodger in the film of Oliver [with Aec Guiness]
I loved the film and music of "Idle on Parade" and bought the EP. and just recently tracked the dvd down -on Ebay. However, I was quite disappointed, as it was very very dated.
One of my first Lps was called "Love is a now and then thing" [only £2.27p in Amazon ] full of very sad songs--like "Speak Low" "Gone with the wind" "What's good about Goodbye"--but I loved it---although it very nearly caused a split up between my then boyfriend and me---but he did eventually become my first husband -so not really sure if that was a good thing !!!
Strangely enough, I just preordered last week, a cd called "The Last songs" which features the last songs he wrote.
Plus my top favourite from him ever--"Why"--which I also managed to get as a duet with his daughter Tara.
Even more strange, he was the bonus question on "Eggheads" this week--who was Joan Collins 2nd husband--I was surprised at how long it took the Eggheads to answer, as I got it instantly.
Lastly--how great to work in a record shop-I would have loved that--and actually meeting up with Anthony Newley--amazing !!!

Lovely story, Sandra.

Re: THE SMELL OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE ROAR OF THE CROWD
Unfortunately the Anthony Newley visit was before I worked in the record shop.I queued as a customer. The same with Michael Holliday and The Story Of My Life- I ruined that autograph too!
The only 'stars' I can remember coming to the shop when I worked there in the late 60's were
Dave Berry one time, and another time The Casuals.
I remember also that we used to have a stand with the latest top 20 records on it.We regularly used to have guys come in with a pile of an unheard of single by some artist, asking us to insert the title on the stand hoping that the customer would think it was a new top hit and buy it!
Our boss did it once with persuasion but refused after that as not the thing to do
Incidentally,I have a small photo taken from the window in the said record shop of when Matt was
'Artiste Of The Month'.It has faded out of all recognition. Is there any hope for it does anyone know
