Mary Cleere Haran

Post by ROBERT M. » Wed Feb 23, 2011 11:25 pm

As mentioned on last Sundays Russell Davies programme the cabaret singer Mary Cleere Haran has passed away aged 58...................she was tragically knocked off her push bike when a car reversing from a driveway, drove straight into her............how terrible :( :( ................here on her Facebook page, Mary talks about her friendship with Blossom Dearie (there are 2 five minute videos on the page .........which are a bit risque in places)..............but entertaining also :)

Thanks for mentioning this Robert. I hadn't heard it. Very sad. I never had an opportunity to hear her music (pretty much centralized to New York, Florida, and California), but she does sing the great standards and loves Doris Day.

I pulled up the weblinks and found them so interesting, especially the stories about Blossom Dearie.

Thanks for the info--what an awful thing to happen. I guess that this was fairly recent--when I was checking ebay, someone was selling her obituary out of an LA paper for about £3.50, but I see it came from a 2011 paper. Not a nice way to earn a few pounds, I have to say.

The other cd was called "This heart of mine|"

I confess that I have never heard of her, but the cd tracks looked right uo my street, and I was able to listen to a few tracks. On Amazon, there is another different cd available to downlad for about £6.00, so I may look into that when I get a chance.

Until I heard the sad news on Russell Davies show, I too had not heard of Mary Cleere Haran ................so if the terrible accident hadn't happened I probably would never have known anything about Mary...................what a tragic way to found out about someone's talents :(

Listening to Mary sing Manhattan :) but the words of the song have been changed to a more modern sounding lyric.....................gone are the lines And tell me what street compares to Mott street in July and And My Fair Lady is a terrific show they say...................I wonder how many others songs have had their lyrics changed, for the better or for worse, to make them sound more modern ? :)

Yes, Robert-I made a silly mistake!!

Yes, I like the cd, although I have not heard it all the way through yet, as I keep drifting off to sleep. Her voice reminds me of another singer, but I cannot place who right now.

Thank you Robert--although it is actually nearer 4000---I work hard to keep my 100% record-it is not always easy.

But I also buy , along with selling.

The late Mary Cleere Haran recorded 6 CDs (1 of them a live one). Well I had five of them and was waiting to obtain the other one, but the price on Amazon ranged between £20 and £30............so I waited and waited.............I checked last night, and on the marketplace a seller was selling a new sealed copy of http://www.amazon.co.uk/Memory-All-That ... 042&sr=1-3 ..................for 6.48 :D

A lovely song, beautifully sung by this truly underrated singer.

Although I have never heard that song before.
