ESTHER (MINUS ABI) OFARIM

Post by jon » Thu Jan 24, 2013 4:39 pm

I was wondering if any forumites were familiar with the solo recordings of Esther Ofarim, one half of the more famous duo Esther and Abi Ofarim, who of course are famous for their (OK but slightly annoying) No 1 1968 hit "Cinderella Rockefella". I've been listening to some of Esther's solo recordings on youtube and they are pretty good. I was introduced to them when her version of the Gibb Brothers' song "The Morning of My Life" was played on 'Sounds of the Sixties' on Radio 2 a few weeks ago; my only previous familiarity with this song was a live version of it by Johnny Mathis when he performed it in concert, actually in a more uptempo version than Esther's, who sings it rather more slowly and wistfully but nonetheless very effectively. Her recordings of "A Taste of Honey" and the Beatles' "She's Leaving Home" are also very good. Some of her albums are available on Amazon but they're not that cheap so I haven't committed to a purchase - well, not just yet anyway.

Jon it's funny you should mention Johnny's version of MorningOf My Life as I watched his 50th anniverdary concert yesterday and he sang that, my goodness he was in great voice and looked just the same.

I don't think I have heard any solo recordings by Esther infact I only know two of her hits with Abi, Cinderella Rockefella & Just One More Dance, I always found her voice irritating.

Try Ebay perhaps you may get them cheaper?

Hi Karl

Thanks for the advice; I hadn't thought of ebay, so I might try that. The Johnny Mathis concert I'm most familiar with of him singing "The Morning of My Life" is actually from the 1970s, which is also on youtube; as I said, a more uptempo rendition than Esther's, but both are good. The song was a 'Bee Gees' composition and was on one of their 1965 albums, I believe.

Yes it's a lovely song Jon and I'm a huge Bee Gees fan anyway - their concert some years ago was fantastic - I always wanted to see them again but I do have some videos.

I have seen and heard JM sing that song so many times live in concert--he often opened his act with that song--I do not know why it is not as popular as some of the other Bee Gee songs, as it is a great song-I love it.
