Shattered 78

Post by Marian » Wed Jan 07, 2009 9:12 am

I was recently pleased to find another 78 of Matt's on ebay, Garden of Eden/Love me Do, that I subequently won. It arrived yesterday, completely shattered, due entirely to inadequate packaging. I have received sheet music better packaged than this was. I had especially asked the seller to pack it well too, as the same thing has happened to me before, but this was the worst packaging I have ever had. So at the moment, I'm shattered too.

I have been offered a refund Richard, but nothing so far.
It was the rarity of these recordings and the couldn't care less attitude of the seller that upset me the most. He just said to throw it away.
I have three 78s already, My House is Your House/ the Bean Song, Everybody Falls in Love with Someone/ Out of Sight Out of Mind, and unfortunately cracked across the centre, but still playable (the other incident I referred to above) Another Time Another Place and A Story of Ireland.

A similar thing happened to me some years ago Marian. That was a 78 as well.

I received two photo prints (not originals, thank goodness) from the USA on Monday, in a flimsy envelope, which contained one piece of cardboard inside the envelope with the photos, and yes the envelope had a crease right down the middle...............as did BOTH photos!!!! I emailed the firm yesterday, and luckily they are sending me two more prints :D but I can feel the agony of Marian, losing a priceless 78 from all those years ago.

Sorry to hear about your shattered 78. They should have packed it better, but probably had no idea just how priceless this record is.

I won't throw it away anyway. I'll see if I can somehow hold it together, it's in three pieces. I know I won't be able to play it, but any ideas folks?
It has it's original Decca sleeve which is nice to have, although a little worn and grubby which you'd expect for it's age. The record itself looked to have been in good condition.
The seller had put one layer of bubble wrap around it and a few odd scraps of thin cardboard and then sent it in a jiffy bag. At least the one previously had been in a polystyrene box.
Postage was £5 too, and only cost him £1.94
Anyhow I now have a full refund, but I'd so much prefer it to be the record.
:(

I couldn't believe my luck when the very same 78 record turned up again on ebay last week, and tonight I was successful in winning it. As I'm sure you can understand, I'm thrilled to get another rare record like this, and so soon after losing the other copy. :D :D
Now I'd like you all to pray that it gets here safely!!

email the seller Marian, and tell him/her about your previous purchase and that you need extra protection for this delicate purchase :)

I had already told the seller my tale of woe before bidding this time. He has assured me his breakages history is only 1% and I need not fear!

Well, you are obviously all very useless at praying..
it arrived this morning and at first appeared fine, but again unfortunately it had a piece broken off. I do not hold the seller resposible at all this time as he had packed the record perfectly, but the Royal Mail destruction squad had struck again. It begins to look as though they actually target any packages marked 'Fragile'.
What a wonderful seller though, he went out of his way to find yet another copy, not one of his own or even on ebay, but found one on another website.. netsoundsmusic.com
Now I know this is Feb 13th and I don't really feel I could face the heartache of yet another breakage, but maybe, possibly, third time lucky??!!!!
Watch this space.
Marian
