I thought I liked the song, but now his gasping of air and exaggerated styling is beginning to bother me.

I've been debating for a very l-o-o-o-n-g time what I should post as my favourite Matt track. I've decided it's impossible - there are so many possibilities, and my choice depends upon my current mood..... :)

So, I decided to choose the one track that I think for me completely epitomises the great Matt, which is Portrait of My Love.

From the opening strings the scene is already beautifully set for a poignant song. Then that opening line There could never be... with that truly wonderful tremolo on the there and the be, and all the hairs are up on the back of my neck, and a shiver has gone done my spine, and that says it all. Beautiful. Incomparable. Matt Monro in one line.

Conicidentally this was also the first Matt track I ever heard (as far as I can remember) when I was about 10.

Only just coming to this thread and what a lot of diverse and beautiful choices there are.

It's tempting to go for a lesser known LP track such as "This Is All I Ask" or "The Nearness Of You" but i'd probably be being a little disingenuous, as for me the ultimate Matt Monro track has been and probably always will be "Born Free" to my mind it's the song that made him "a citizen of the world" in the same way Tony Bennet wouldn't be Tony Bennet without "those little cable cars", Matt wouldn't be Matt without "The world still astounds you each time you look at a star".

Hi all---there have been some great suggestions for your "Tip Top Number One, Matt Track". I thought it would be interesting to see all the suggestions made, so far.

Starting with my one---

Mariana 44 --- I'll take Romance
Robert ---- Softly , as I leave you.
Lena ---- Can this be love.
Harry ---- From Russia with Love.
Edgar ---- When Love comes along.
Terence ---- The Music Played [Stereo version]
Jintgirl ---- Undecided!!!
Anita ---- Born free
Paul ----- Ethel Baby
Dottie ---- Walk Away
Paul ---- Till the end of time
Grant --- Before you go
Paul and Sue --- You've got possibilities
Terrajel ---- Portrait of my love
Marty ---- Born Free.

Only 1 doubled up---Born free.

On the way we also managed to include such diverse subjects as BLACK PUDDING; ONE FINGERED TYPING : WORLD CUP; WHATEVER HAPPENED TO TIGER BAY; JAMES MORRISON [who!!!!!]

I intend to do the same with "Songs I wish I could hear sung by Matt"---but that is a long, long, long list.!!

I don't half miss Black Pudding. (and I must have missed the thread during my sojourn too) We have a Blutwurst sausage over here, which is similar, but it's not a patch on the real thing.

Hi Marty, Mariana44 and everyone. Marty we were discussing the ingredients of Black Pudding, which in the end put most people off eating it!!!!

Mariana44, can I change my mind for my favourite Matt song?? as I think I now prefer Jinty Girls suggestion "Undecided" better

If Paul is out there, can I just let him know that James Morrisons voice became as it is, as he had a bad bout of Whooping Cough as a child. That's probably why he sounds so out of breath while singing.

Actually I had not realised quite how that was going to look---but it was all true--she could not decide :!: :!:

And I still have not a clue who James Morrison is.

No Mariana44, you have spent all day posting letters on here, haven't you?? mind you there hasn't been that many posts over the past week or so.

James Morrisons debut album went straight into the album charts today at #1.

Hi Marian and Robert, surprise surprise, we hadn't heard of James Morrison either.
However, we have listened to the clip of "Give Me Something" and "Is Anybody There." It's £2.99 at HMV

Thanks, Robert, for the info on the whooping cough that causes James Morrison's gasps for breaths. Yes, I noticed that James Morrison's album is #1. This is very surprising. I don't like his voice, even though I said I did at first. Razorlight should still be the top album, but it will be headed back to #1 soon. I just bought it and it's great!

When you love a a particular singer, it is always next to impossible to name a favourite song above all others, and this is especially true in the case of Matt and, for me, Johnny Mathis. In Matt's case, if I were pushed to it, I would have to nominate either "Look for Small Pleasures" or "Wednesday's Child", with "Look For Small Pleasures" just edging it. "Look For Small Pleasures" has what I call a "Babycham" feel to it, conjuring up images of soft candlelight and cosy dark evenings, and is representative of many of the songs that both Matt and Johnny Mathis sing.

Again, it is asking almost the impossible to name my favourite JM song, but if my life depended on it, it would have to be "Didn't We", which has, of course, been sung by many other sings, but is, I feel, one of JM's most effective renditions.
