Hi All, this sounds rather cruel to poor Barry, but we couldn't help but chuckle, In Australia, officials in one Sydney district have decided to pipe Barry's music over loud speakers in an attempt to drive off the rowdy teenagers and rid the streets and car parks of hooligans whose anti-social cars and loud music annoy residents and drive customers away from businesses, and because some of them have described his Copacabana like poison ivy.
They were then advised that it may not work, and instead they could get a bunch of rowdy female silver haired o.a.ps chasing young men around, pinching their bottoms and throwing their knickers at passing motorists and hanging around in groups. 8) 8)
So it's back to the drawing board.

Hi Lena and Harry--I had heard that about Barry Manilow in Australia, but I thought it was an unfunny joke! He's not that bad---some of his earlier stuff is great, plus he has written some really lovely songs in the past. I confess, I do have all his cd's. plus dvd's , video's etc. And he is great in a live show---unfortunately the last time I went to see him--all the way up to Manchester-staying with friends--his last performance of his latest tour, we had seats 2 rows from the front---he had tonsillitis---after an hour he walked off, leaving us all wondering what was happening! And that was that! It was a bit tough after paying £50.00 for a ticket--we were not even entitled to a refund. At least I got some good pics of him clutching his throat!!!

Hi Marian, yes in spite of this story giving us a chuckle, in all seriousness we agree with every thing that you say, and that Barry Manilow has taken a lot of cruel jibes, and not only do we actually like Barry Manilow and have some of his music including LPs e,t,c, if and when discussing with anyone about singers and performers who show their appreciation to their fans, without second thoughts, Barry is the first name that always springs to mind, and although we have not seen Barry live in concert, over the years we have read articles from fans and seen so much evidence from live interviews on National television that all this has totally convinced us.

Dionne

Barry did wonders as a producer and arranger for Dionne Warwick when she signed with Arista resulting in the hit which rejuvenated her career.....I'll Never Love This Way Again. His voice and piano only formula works on Dionne and he repeated his hitmaking formula with her a few years later with RUN TO ME which they performed as a duet on her album Finder Of Lost Loves.

Hi Dottie---no I do no recall seeing that episode of "Only Fools and Horses"---I am really surprised as I thought I had seen every episode at least a dozen times, as it has been repeated so often---but it still very, very funny.

Feature length episode originally transmitted on 25th December 1993, you can still buy it almost anywhere :) I sometimes wind on to this section just to watch and listen to David Jason, never realised till then what wonderful voice he had......

del boy falls out with raquel, there are the Peckham riots, the so called dental female stalker, and those infra red Russian video cameras..

Hope you manage to find it marianna :)

Hello everyone. I think Andy William's version's of both Matt's "Softly As I Leave You" and "Born Free" are really excellent version's of those two song's. But I obviously prefer our Matts version of the song's.

Andy William's did record some amazing song's though, "Almost There" and "Home Lovin' Man" two fabulous hit's of his I love. Other song's recorded by Andy William's but given a great interpretation's by Andy are "Getting Over You" "Abraham, Martin and John" "The Hawaiian Wedding Song" and a lovely version Acker Bilk's "Stranger On The Shore".
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

Robert, I love Home Lovin' Man too. I was first exposed to the song when Shirley Bassey lipsynched it for her TV special in the 70s while lazing about on a sailboat. Unfortunately she did not record it on her albums so I found Andy's version which unfortunately turned out to be the only distorted track on my cd The Essential Andy Williams. It is obviously mastered from worn vinyl.

Hi Robert, Terence and Dottie

Firstly to Dottie--I managed to get hold of a copy of that episoder of "Only Fools etc", but not had time to watch it yet.

Andy Williams has got a really good voice---but his version of "Abraham, Martin and John" is just superb as far as I am concerned.

Hi all--it seems ages since anyone posted anything here, and although I was the last one-I have another one.

This is a song that really gets to me, and although I have heard other versions, this one is 100% my favourite.

It is Jimmy Durante singing "Make Someone Happy".

I must confess I would have never expected to see Jimmy Durante in a list of my favourites, but he just does something to that song, and I love it. It is short--but so very very sweet.

It's so important to make someone happy.
Make just one someone happy.
Make just one heart the heart you sing to

One smile that cheers you.
One face that lights when it nears you.
One girl --you're everything to

Fame, if you win it,
Comes and goes in a minute
Where's the real stuff in life, to cling to?

Love is the answer.
Someone to love is the answer.
Once you've found her,
Build your world around her.

Make someone happy.
Make just one someone happy.
And you will be happy too.

Hi Lena and Harry--I also love Jimmy Durante singing "The glory of Love".

And as a complete coincidence, less than 20 minutes after my last post, I went to bed, and switched on David Jacobs---and about the 3rd song in was "Make Someone Happy"---but sung by Robert Goulet, and it actually was a very nice version---but it just did not have that little bit of "magic" that is in Jimmy Durantes version.
