Matt's voice

Post by Inky Fingers » Thu May 23, 2013 9:08 pm

I've been listening to Matt's first two albums, Love Is the Same Anywhere and Sings Hoagy Carmichael, and it seems to me that his voice is higher and lighter on the first album, and deeper and more mature on the second.

Did he actually sing in lower keys, or was he simply using a different part of his voice?

Yes, I think the key has a lot to with it. Matt's voice did change a bit over the years, due to age (and probably a large number of cigarettes) but his range (and breath control) didn't significantly.

'Love is The Same Anywhere' was made in the very early days of Matt's relationship with George & Johnnie so I would guess it was all part of the learning curve to find the best part of his voice to work with. With most singer's this is easy to find, but Matt 's range was better than most and pinning it down would certainly be harder.
