After reading Jack Jones' website I found it very interesting that he smoked up to 4 packs of cigarettes daily when he was young....
It's surprising he can still sing the way he does!

It amazes me that so many singers were/are smokers, they used to be pictured with a cigarette in their hand on record sleeves. I am sure I've even seen a picture of Johnny Mathis with a cigarette - unless it was just done for effect as in those days smoking was seen to be "Hip" and "Cool".

Nat King Cole smoked to excess, which apparently
contributed to the slightly husky quality in his voice.
He died of lung cancer ultimately and Matt was
chosen to replace him on Capitol Records - it's an
ill wind ...

I have never seen Johnny Mathis smoking--obviously not at a concert, but not at any of the many lunches & suppers he attended, nor on the golf course--and I think I would have been able to smell the smoke if he did. So as you say, I think the pic of him smoking was just for "effect".

Getting back to Jack Jones, after listening to his "Live at the London Palladium" CD, most of the song titles
in this CD were the same when I saw him at his night club show last month, but his voice seemed more strained.
I think this CD was recorded by Jack in 1991 so he was younger then.....Were any of you there for that performance?

I was there Henry, with Peter. Just a small secret, some of the tracks are from The Fairfield Halls in Croydon, so it wasn't all Live at the Palladium. I was also there though. The photo of Jack and baby Nicole which is on the original recording was taken by a friend of ours, Denis Reed. Jack still refers to it. Lots of our friends were there at both concerts Henry.

When I saw Jack in the Summer his voice did not seem strained at all, to me he sounded just like he always did and he was still hitting the high notes.

Just listening to Jack's new signed CD, a wonderful gift (except that we had to pay for it!) that is dedicated to his friends and fans over the years. :D Many of the songs on this concert tour were chosen by us prior to the tour so mean a lot to us. :D

Was it signed because it's you Marian or will they all be?

They are all signed Karl, on the disc and on the dedication. Nice touch, makes it more personal. :D

Apparently Jack is looking forward to going to Nashville early next year to record a Country Album.
