I am certainly going to get round to buying "Heart of the Man". Is the version of "Walk Away" on there the same one as elsewhere, but just remastered, I wonder? They sound very similar, though I haven't listened to it in detail to tell whether any of the actual sung notes are different. It's certainly not unusual for singers to record different versions of the same song in their careers. I certainly know that Johnny Mathis recorded several different versions of the same songs over the years - "Strangers in the Night" is one that comes to mind. He recorded this in the late sixties and again in 1971, and the two are noticeably quite different, though I prefer the sixties' recording, which displays again his remarkable phrasing and breath control.
Not sure about buying "The Singers' Singer" - it does seem to contain a large number of tracks which I already have and I'm not sure it's worth the price just to get the few that I don't, even though I would dearly love to have these in themselves.

Hello jon and Mark. The versions of "Exodus" and "Walk Away" are different versions. If they weren't, I don't think they would have been included on the "Heart of a Man" especially as people will have the original version of "Walk Away" umpeenth times over.

I agree with Robert that every Matt Monro fan should own The Singer's Singer 4 CD set. The price is usually reduced at HMV.
You may already have them, but those EMI releases of two original albums on one CD are excellent. I love the pairing of This Is The Life and Here's To My Lady, as well as These Years and The Late Late Show. They include many songs that never appear on the compilations. Also excellent is Hollywood And Broadway, which doesn't contain any of the hits.
I couldn't believe all of those EMI double album re-releases at the HMV in Southampton. I bought ones by Nat King Cole and Julie London. We have no reissues like this in the United States. You should consider yourselves very fortunate to have so much excellent music available to purchase.

Hi Paul---yes those double albums are a great idea---I have some by Jack Jones, Johnny Mathis and others.
But on the whole, I believe cd's are less expensive in USA than over here.
On my first trip to USA, I just went crazy, all that lovely music at a bargain price!!! I had to buy an extra bag to carry it all home in!!

I'm afraid that times have changed, Marian. CDs are not cheap in the US anymore, and the selection is poor. Plus VAT is included in your price and our state tax is additional. I save up all my shopping for music for my trips to the UK.
On my cruise, I had to educate my dining companions from the UK that the US is no longer that inexpensive. I can get a week-end rate at a hotel in London with full English breakfast much cheaper than any hotel in a medium sized or large US city. The hotel prices in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Washington are incredibly high. I love the super breaks that are often offered throughout the UK with breakfast and dinner included. Again, nothing like this is offered in the US.
And then the sales on neckties and shirts at Marks & Spencer and Bhs. I get more compliments on my Bhs ties that cost 3.50 pounds than any designer ties I purchase in the US. Is this the first time neckties have been mentioned on the Matt Monro message board?!

Hi Paul---well, It is over 10 years since I was last in USA, and 25 years since the first time, so obviously things have changed since then.
I am glad you like our M&S, and BHS--they do not have shops like that anywhere else. And yes, it may well be the first mention of neckties on this forum.
But London it still considered to be one of the most expensive holiday destinations, I believe.

Hello everyone. I agree with Paul that the (2) 2 on 1 releases mentioned, by Matt are really excellent recordings. So professional in their sound and Matts voice seemed to hit a peak at that time in his recording career. Nearly all the songs on those two double albums are terrific
I think if jon is a big Matt fan, he would WANT to buy any unreleased songs available by Matt. The 4 box set contains so much MORE than just the songs.

I think you may all have persuaded me to buy "The Singers' Singer" now.
I have a few of the double album releases but my favourite by far is the Hollywood and Broadway set. I particularly love "Look for Small Pleasures", "Sunrise Sunset" and "Prettty Polly". I love the last phrase on "Pretty Polly" and always play it back several times - a masterpiece of breath control and phrasing, I think.

Thanks Marian, I'd seen that Matt jnr was appearing in Blackpool and went onto the site to find his tour dates, while looking I entered a competition about Joe Longthone who was the special guest of the month, and to my surprise I WON!!
and got a DVD of Joes in the post on Tuesday.
My friends and I were supposed to see Matt Jnr on Saturday at the Paradise Room in Blackpool but unfortunately he cancelled, but we'll catch him another time hopefully.

old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternatives.
