Not an auspicious start,Michael Ball with a dearth of conviction on Walk Away..
It's going downhill :(

Quite enjoyed the show, all good songs as expected, although we wished one or two of the singers had stayed at home. Don spoke of his gratitude to Matt and said that he wouldn't be sitting there if it wasn't for Matt. In fact for the first part of the show we thought it was the Matt Monro Hour... We're not complaining of course. :)
They say... it's not how you start it's how you finish, and that certainly applied to Michael Ball. After a duff rendering of "Walk Away" he redeemed himself with "Love Changes Everything" at the end.
Does anyone know why Gregory Porter wears a cap and balaclava ?.. is it to hide some physical disfigurement or is it meant to be a gimmick, :? because whatever it is, it hasn't helped his voice. :( but the song, "On Days Like These" helped it along :)
Kerry Ellis was one of the guests on the Christmas Spectacular show that we saw at the Royal Albert Hall last Friday, but without her pregnancy which was obvious when this programme was recorded.
We could have done with the sub-titles on when Frances Ruffelle sang. We didn't hear a word she sang, but it didn't matter much.
Andrew Lloyd Webber was in the audience and so his music was included.
Marty Webb still singing really well, but no prizes for guessing what she sang. Maria Friedman, Katie Melua, Gary Willmott and Laura Wright with Men Aloud in our opinion the best singers of the evening but Richard Stilgoe was as brilliant as always with his clever rhyming words put into song on the piano.
Over all it was a nice tribute to one of the country's best lyricists. :)

L&H I agree Maria Friedman was great. I don't know what I did but I imucked up the recording of the show and it ended before the show did.

You ask about Gregory Porter, I have seen hm several times on tv and wondered the same, I read about him online and he calls it his Jazz hat, I would imagine it must be rather hot and uncomfortable singing with all that around your face.

Forgot to say he won't say anymore other than it's his Jazz Hat, he either has something wrong with his face or it's a gimmick - either way it would drive me mad something always being round my face. He's a good singer although I don't always like his songs.

We agree with you Lena & Harry about the show.

We thought of you Maxine as soon as Don mentioned the name Maxine and we really enjoyed the song Richard Stilgoe sang. :)
