Popmaster Quiz on 15 August 2006
You may want to "listen again" to the Popmaster Quiz on Ken Bruce's programme on Radio 2 on Tuesday, August 15. I listen to this quiz every day and one of my goals is to appear on Popmaster.
I don't want to give it away, so I'll just say that one of our favourite singers was featured in a question today! I was very surprised. And I liked the contestant's response---even though she didn't know the answer.

I qualified for the online Popmaster quiz. I answered 10 out of 10 questions correctly. But to continue to the next round, you have to live in the U.K.
I'll try again by calling in when I'm next in the U.K. But I'm sure they'll require that I live in the U.K. --- because of contest regulations, sending me the CD wallet, digital radio, etc.
I also wanted to be on the Name That Tune TV show. But I was too young when it was on in the U.S. I always loved to say "I can name that tune in one note".

Hi Paul--I always loved "Name that Tune"---but a lot of times , when they used to say "I name that tune in one"---a clue was always given too, which made it so much easier. But a great programme--wish they would bring it back.
I do not see why you shopuld not be able to go on to "Popmaster"---it really should make no difference if you are a uk resident, Uk passport etc.
I would give it a go if I were you. However, I am quite happy , having a go in my living room---I get too many wrong to go on the radio--especially the more modern stuff

Hi Marian and Robert, yes Sorry it was Rae.
He married Janette Scott, daughter of actress Thora Hird in 1959 and they divorced in 1965.
Janette Scott then married singer Mel Torme ( The Velvet Fog) in 1966 and divorced in 1977.
She married William Rademaekers in 1981.
As far as we remember Jackie Rae returned to Toronto where he continued singing in his own band "The Spitfire Band"

Hello all. So Thora Hirds daughter married Mel Torme. She sounded quite fond of wedding ceremonies

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Hi Robert, Lena and Harry---yes I was wearing my wrong glasses again last night
I knew that Jackie Rae had been married to someone famous and it just would not come to me--of course it was Janette Scott. I knew of couse that she was married to Mel Torme--in fact when he sings "A nightingale sang in Berkely Square" --live version with George Shearing---Mel says "I'm American, but I love the English---if you don't mind skipping over a 10 year period when I was married to an Englishwoman---but let's not get morose". So there you go. I know they had 2 children, a boy and a girl, who are adults now.
I read Thora Hird's autobiography, and she had no time for her American son-in-law, and thought very little of him. I do not know what he thought of her, as it is an unlikely duo, to say the least. But maybe the above quote gives a clue!!
However, I love Mel Torme's singing, and I also thought Thora Hird was great----a real character, and I was very sad when she died. Also I have watched Janette Scott in films since she was a very young girl--of course she has not made any films for ages, as far as I know.
