You are right we saw Bryan fronting the Orchestra many a time and he was at Potters again this year.He gave a marvellous presentation on the intricacies
of arranging a song, such a talenting guy who still arranges for the Orchestra today.
The information about Chris taking over the direction of the Orchestra comes from the official Syd Lawrence Orchestra website.

Hi Sandra---
I am happy to hear Bryan is still alive and active with the SLO. Where can I order that new CD you mentioned Chris Dean with the SLO titled
"The Big Band Songbook" as I checked into Amazon.com/uk with no luck? Thanks for the reply........Henry (USA)

Hi Henry---

The last CD out was called 'STRICTLY BIG BAND' I just struggled to find it on Amazon,I was typing in Syd Lawrence,Chris Dean, but it is just under the title 'Strictly Big Band' so you should be able to order it o.k.
The title you mentioned 'The Big Band Songbook' was just Chris Dean singing.
I will e.mailyou when the new one comes out.

Cheers Sandra :)

If you are a fan of this Orchestra AND the songs of JAMES BOND don't miss Chris Deans new show :CHRIS DEAN'S SYD LAWRENCE ORCHESTRA- 007- THE MUSIC OF JAMES BOND.
We were blown away( Well, the trumpet players were!)last week at The Winding Wheel Theatre in Chesterfield.
Chris of course sang From Russia With Love and told a story of how the Orchestra toured with Matt for quite a time, what a lovely guy he was and how Matt and Syd used to fight over the number one dressing room, both of them turning up earlier every day to get the best room :)
As well as Chris, their was Angie Mills and another singer, think her name was Miranda.Everyone including the Orchestra sang and played almost every song from the Bond films(some we had never heard of)-nearly blowing the roof off the theatre with the power of it all.
A superb show from start to finish :D :D

Thanks Christine.
On Saturday we are going to see a local band called the Paula Baldwin Big Band where the guest singer is Gary Grace who recently made a CD singing a fine tribute to the music of Matt :)

Sandra I am so envious of you seeing Gary Grace, that will be a brilliant night - where is the show?

There is a Syd Lawrence cd I have my eye on released by Dutton Vocalion, I must buy it soon. I saw him years ago but can't remember where, possibly the London Palladium.

Hi Karl it is only a local theatre called The Terry O'Toole, and only holds 200 people.
If I get chance to say hello I will tell him that I have put his CD cover in the MM photo gallery!
He said that he had sold quite a few CD's from the forum members which I told him I was surprised due to most MM fans wanting the real thing!

Yes but Gary is such a good singer and he sings lots of other material apart from Matt's songbook.

I take it the show was good? With only 200 capacity it would be a nice intimate atmosphere.

Still waiting to hear about your show Sandra.

The birthday dinner party was good although the birthday girl herself was absent, she was going to Stornoway with her job for two weeks and the ferry does not sail on Sundays.

The waiters came out with a tray of cupcakes and played Happy Birthday over the speakers so one of the other girls had to pretend it was her, they then did it again as the party behind us also had a birthday

Hi Karl your dinner party sounded good despite the absence of the birthday girl herself!

We had to have our beloved old friend, our cat Trixie put to sleep on Monday so have been feeling very low :(

Anyway-Paula Baldwin and her big band have some great musicians in the band.It was unique to us because it has only been going for ten years and apparently Paula took over when her husband died.So she is the presenter if you like reading out the songs, who wrote them and what film they came from when appropriate.
She was dressed in a long gown as were the two glamorous female singers, quite old fashioned really.
Gary was as suave as ever in a dinner suit and top hat.He didn't sing any Matt songs as it wasn't his show.
We managed a quick chat afterwards,he was pleased that we thought his Matt CD was a fine tribute and I was
able to tell him that we had put the front and back sleeve, courtesy of Richard,on the MM photo gallery.
It was an 18 piece band but next time he will be with his own show with just an eight piece band. That is in November when he will sing his own choice of songs, including Matt :D
