Hi all,
I'm probably mentioning something you guys already now, but I think Cy Coleman wrote Real Live Girl, which is one the best Matt Monro songs to sing along too! I murder it most days!
He also wrote a tune called 'Pussycat' - a real child of it's time - does anyone know the history of this song?
I have it on a compilation tape from ages ago and often wondered if this song featured in a show or was a 'one-off'?
Thank you!
Gray

I never heard of Pussy Cat by Cy Coleman. I did some research on Pussy Cat and it appears to be a "one-off". I listened to a snippet and it reminds me of Like Young by Andre Previn---what a great groove. Like you say Gray, definitely the sound of a particular time---early 1960s.
I didn't know Cy Coleman wrote Real Live Girl --- definitely one of the best Matt Monro sing-along songs. Through my research, Cy Coleman definitely wrote Real Live Girl; it's from the musical Little Me.
Now a question for you: With all your singing practice, Gray, do we expect to see you performing in local communty theatre anytime soon?!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for replying.
Lena & Harry - yes, I know what you mean!
It does sound very similar to The Pink Panther Theme!
It's funny because I played the song last night and immediately my one year old and four year old daughters started tip-toeing around the lounge!
When I mentioned the song was called 'Pussycat', that was it, I had to repeat play the bloomin' thing about 50 times whilst they prowled around the room pretending to be cats.
Paul - 'Little Me': I have to be honest and say I have never heard of this musical - has anybody out there seen it?
'Real Live Girl' is a fantastic song though.
I have to be honest and say I do go for singing lessons! Not that will be debuting at the Palladium next month! The only chance of that happening is if I get a job there sweeping the stage!
But I go because I love music. And I am very lucky. My teacher is a huge Matt fan, so she is more than happy to work through any Matt song I take along.
Then I try to perform the songs in end of term concerts, about twice a year. Unfortunately I suffer terribly with stage fright, so it is a huge battle for me to step out onto a stage. I swear the ONLY reason I do it, is so that people can hear Matt Monro songs. That is the only thought in my mind when I open my mouth to sing.
Anyway, thanks for replying everyone, if anyone has seen 'Little Me', I would love to hear about it!
Gray

Hi Gray, good to know that you are getting pleasure from your singing.
And what better reason than just to sing Matt's songs.
All that we know about Little Me is that it is a musical comedy based on a book by Patrick Dennis about a fictional lady an imaginary diva, of stage screen and tv named Belle Poitrine. It sounds as though this could have an x certificate.
Anyway as far as we understand Sid Caesar was in the first production in 1962 and it has been revived twice since.

Hi Marian, Lena & Harry
Thanks for replying!
I wonder if any Matt fans were familiar with the tune 'Real Live Girl' prior to Matt Monro singing the song?
"Little Me" is a musical that is unknown to me, (mind you, that's not saying much, my knowledge of musical theatre is very limited!) but now I'm curious to see it! (It has nothing to do with the X certificate - honest
)
I am more familiar with movies - and I don't believe Little Me was ever made into a film.
Quick question for everyone if you would like to answer, what's the best piece of theatre you ever saw? Muscial, drama, comedy, whatever genre, which play sticks out in your mind as your most enjoyable night out at the theatre?

Hi Gray---yes I have heard the song "Real Live Girl " before---it is included on a Barry Manilow Album "Showstoppers"-and when he did the "Showstoppers" tour he sang this song live--he wowed the audeience with it!.
My best night out at a theatre has to be either "Les Miserables", because it is a fantastic show, but also because I was lucky enough to see it on Broadway, New York. It was an amazing experience!!
And also I saw a brilliant show called "EFX" at the MGM grand in Las Vegas--with Michael Crawford. "EFX" means "effects", and it was a show like no other--some astonishing, magical, things going on.

Hello Gray and everyone else - I found out that the following artists have recorded Real Live Girl. The album title is also listed. I am most interested in the Ray Charles Singers version. I have their greatest hits CD, but it's not on there. (Note: This Ray Charles is an arranger and not the singer/pianist who recorded Hit The Road Jack.)
RAY CHARLES SINGERS: AL-DI-LA AND OTHER EXTRA SPECIAL SONGS FOR YOUNG LOVERS
BARRY MANILOW: SHOWSTOPPERS (which Marian already noted)
JACK JONES: GREATEST HITS
ROBERT GOULET: 16 MOST REQUESTED SONGS
MATT MONRO: GREAT GENTLEMEN OF SONG / SPOTLIGHT ON MATT MONRO
CY COLEMAN SID CAESAR IN LITTLE ME - THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST RECORDING
ROBERT GOULET: ROBERT GOULET
MATT MONRO: SONGS OF LOVE - DISC 3
ROBERT GOULET: ROBERT GOULET'S GREATEST HITS
That's a great question about the best experience watching a musical. I have so many, but here are two. In my first trip to London in 1990, I went to see Five Guys Named Moe and Miss Saigon. Loved them both, but Miss Saigon just blew me away. Then several years later, I went to Les Miserables at the Palace Theatre in London; got "returned" tickets a few hours prior to the curtain. (London is the BEST place to see shows.
) Anyway, the show had been running for several years, so they had gotten into replacement casts. My friend and I couldn't believe how outstanding the woman singing Eponine was. I remember her singing On My Own like it was yesterday. I usually never purchase the programme; sorry I grew up with free programmes
. So I didn't know who she was. So we looked at the cast list posted outside the theatre. It was Lea Salonga. I was thrilled that I got to see her in her most famous role.
Great that you're taking voice lessons, Gray. And wonderful that your teacher appreciates Matt Monro. The best part is that your kids are being exposed to so much excellent music, just as you were. That will keep the standards and excellent vocalists alive for generations.
No one ever gets over stagefright. But it does lessen the more you perform. It may have been dangerous mentioning your end of term concerts; you might see some of us in the audience one day! I've been known to fly to the UK for just about anything and I've never been north of Manchester
. But please, no melismas!
