SHEILA TRACY

Post by Lena & Harry Smith » Fri Oct 03, 2014 10:16 am

Have just seen the sad news that Sheila Tracy has passed away at the age of 80. Sheila started out as a member of the Ivy Benson All Girls Band, first woman to read the news on BBC Radio 4, a regular presenter for Radio 2, but remembered mainly for introducing the BBC Big Band Special programmes. She was also a professional trombonist.
R.I.P. Sheila Tracy.

The name rings a bell.

My late cousin Carol worked with the Ivy Benson band in the days of hot pants and I believe she kitted them out with the outfit.

Well Ivy Benson herself demanded perfection with everything, so your cousin Carol must have been good at what she did Karl. This band was very popular and toured with the likes of Mike and Bernie Winters and The Black And White Minstrel Show, but Sheila Tracy also studied violin, piano, and trombone at the R.A.M. but her 21 years and working with the likes of conductor Barry Forgie gave her an extensive knowledge of Big Band music.
I think Clare Teal is paying tribute to Tracy on her programme tomorrow.

No, her late husband was actor John Arnatt Sandra, and I think her name is spelt without the E as in Stan Traceys.
Their talent and love of the good music was similar though.

Yes Carol was good L&H she had her own trio and also taught piano privately and in schools, in the past she also played rehearsals for Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Morecambe & Wise and Dorothy Squires to name a few.
