Special Days In May

Seeing that we are such a close knit family, I thought it would be nice if you let us know the dates in the year that are special to you.

happy birthday, Harry!
Hope you have a wonderful day.

Thanks for your kind words everyone regaring my beloved Leeds, still haven't got over it, but really, I should be used to Leeds letting me down!
Fair play to Millwall, they were solid at Elland Rd, really well organised.

Harry, please can I ask if you have ever picked up any football players in your cab?

Hi Gray. Thanks for your birthday wishes and I hope you had a good birthday yourself. As to footballers in the cab, i've had a few, namely. Bobby Robson when he was the England manager,Ian Wright (Arsenal) Gary Lineker (retired) Graham le Saux- Tony Adams, Ray Parlour (They had just been to the Tailor to get measured for their cup final suits) it's a job to remember them, there were so many. One of my greatest thrills to was to pick up my all time cricketing hero Freddy Truman after a Lords Test match, he was working for the BBC on test match commentary. All of the personalities I have picked up have been polite and charming, but Ian Wright was the most outgoing and the best tipper. Best wishes, Harry

:)
Thanks for that, Harry, loved reading it.
Ian Wright is on Talk Sport Radio every tea time, if you're interested.
Glad a Yorkshireman is your cricketing hero :) - I also love my cricket, pleased to see England have won the test Series against the WIndies.

Hi Gray, don't forget i'm a Yorkshire lad' "strong i'nt arm"
"and thick i'nt ead" as Lena says.
I spent the first ten years of my life in "Gods own county" and always supported Yorkshire CCC. Even after moving down south I used to go to Lords and the Oval to watch the cricket. Days of Len Hutton, Johnny Wardle, Brian Close, Ray Illingworth, etc. Not to forget, Denis Compton, John Edrich, of Middlesex, and the great players from other counties that played in the Test matches. Ted Dexter. Peter May, Colin Cowdry, etc. As youngsters we could get a days work at the ground renting out the cushens at 6p. at time, then after the days play collect them all up again.
As we got older we got promoted to selling score cards, and we never missed a ball being bowled. Great Days. Harry

Hi Harry

I'm sorry, I had forgotten you and I are kith and kin! :)
Where did you live in Yorkshire?

Gosh, how I wish I could of watched those players too.

Amanda here Harry, I remember Graham taking me to Headingley about 7 years ago to watch England v Pakistan - we took our seats to find we were the only white faces amongst a sea of vivacious Pakistani supporters. :)
It was a one daye game and England got beat - the Pakistani supporters enjoyed having two England fans amongst their midst, I can tell you! :)

Back to Graham: Harry, you didn't mention Geoff Boycott, did you ever see him bat?

Hi Gray & Amanda: Geoff Boycott, another Hero of mine, saw him bat a few times along with his opening partner John Hampshire. On Hampshires first England appearance he scored a century and was dropped for the next test.!!!! A few years ago Lena and I were guests at charity cricket match in Witney, Oxfordshire. There we were introduced to, Denis Compton, Colin Milburn,David Steel,Tom Graveney, Chris Cowdry, commentater Brian Johnston, Bob Willis, and one of our favourite entertainers, Roy Castle who played in the match and loved his cricket. Roy entertained us playing his trumpet. with a jazz band friend of ours and near the end when he was leaving to go and do a local cabaret, at the edge of the playing field, he got out of the car and played "On Ilkley moor baht'at" which stopped the game and raised an enormous cheer. What a wonderful gentleman and entertainer. Cricket was always my first love and i have been privileged to see some great matches and meet some of the great players. Of course in my day there was only polite applause a few hearty cheers, sometimes during tense moments you could here a pin drop, but I have also expearienced your moment at Headingly Amanda. the first time i could'nt believe it, but now it's excepted. Nice to read your comments Amanda & Gray. I was born in Middlesbrough in 1933 and in 1939 was evacuated to village near you called Sheriff Hutten I stayed there until 1943 then moved to London .Harry

YUP !! it is Robert :D Historically part of the North Riding Of Yorkshire.
It became the county borough of Teeside in 1968 and the main county of Cleveland in 1974, but then Cleveland was scrapped in 1996 and Middlesbrough became within the county of North Yorkshire.

Happy Belated Birthday, Harry. I really enjoyed reading your stories about cricket -- even though I don't know anything about the sport. I think I've heard of Roy Castle and will have to search for some of his records.

Happy Anniversary Amanda and Gray. Perhaps Mickey and Minnie will dance the Anniversary Waltz for you! Have a great holiday in Florida.

It is my Mums birthday today she is 88 but looks 10 years younger.
We are going out to Sunday lunch to her favourite restaurant called the Mussel and Crab which is at Tuxford in Nottinghamshire.
We will be playing her favourite Frank Sinatra in the car there and back, although the last couple of weeks we have converted her to Matt at the BBC.
She never tire of telling everyone that today is Empire Day which was Queen Victorias birthday.
I don't think many people have heard of it?

Firstly, Happy Anniversary to Gray and Amanda--I am sure that you are all having a wonderful time, and look forward to hearing about it, when you return. I have been to Disneyland in California several times, and I know it is just a magical place, for all ages.

Secondly , happy birhday to Sandra's mum--what a lovely day that sounds, especially if the weather is as good there as it is today in Kent.

I knew about Empire Day, as today was my Auntie Millies birthday [my mum's sister], although she died several years ago.
