Talking of a dirge, you know how much I love Dusty but I can't stand her singing the Lesley Gore song Love Me By Name. I call it "That Mournful Dirge", I have tried to like it and failed and hit the skip button every time it comes on.karl wrote:Don't put me off buying Alexander's cd, I was impressed with him on the VE day concert, until then I never even knew he sang.Sandra wrote:Agree Karl as no one sings ON DAYS LIKE THESE like Matt-Alexander Armstrong despite having a good voice makes his version sound SUCH A DIRGE in my opinion

Re: What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
Did anyone else see "The One Show " tonight. ??
Alexander Armstrong was guest and naturally plugging his CD, and although he is a very good singer, he should stick to his baritone classics.
James Martin standing in for Matt Baker, mentioned that ...... "On Days Like These" was recorded by Matt, but Alexander still went ahead and murdered the song. Bloody awful !!!
This is Matt's song only !!

I just watched this on the I Player and I think Alexander's vocals were great, there is no denying the man can sing but Matt sings it in a more relaxed style which works better. It's the same when any of the famous tenors attempt a popular song they always sounds rather stilted.
So no L&H I can't agree that Alexander murdered the song I also liked his version and I still want to buy his cd. Alexander is singing the way he was trained, singers like Matt & Dusty etc develop their own unique style and sing from their heart & soul. Alexander whilst being a very accomplished singer does not sing with his heart & soul.
Before closing I see Il Volo have included You Don't Have To Say You Love Me on their new cd, I like them a lot and want to hear what they do with Dusty's number one!!!!

Well Karl, after listening to this again on IPlayer perhaps I was a little harsh with my comments, but he did struggle with a note that I particularly noticed on the One Show, when it came to ..It's on days that I remember, but we are used to Matt singing it with such ease.
I do intend buying the CD, because he can really do justice to the other songs on this album.
Other Tenors and Baritones such as Mario Lanza, and David Hughes for instance made transitions with some songs Some have worked well and some are questionable. I suppose as Kenny Everett would say..It's all done in the best possible taste.

I must watch it again L&H.
By the way I heard Il Volo sing You Don't Have To Say You Love Me on an Amazon clip, rather good but the track had an over heavy drumbeat.
We tend to associate certain singers with certain songs. I don't think anyone sings Over The Rainbow like Judy Garland and I feel the same with Dusty and YDHTSYLM. Much as I like Elvis, his version - well let's not go there!!!!
Watched Alexander again, I didn't care for the high note at the end it rather spoiled the performance. Alexander is in concert at our Playhouse theatre this month, I may go.

The trouble with Elvi's version of You Don't Have To Say You Love Me .......is that the song was recorded "live" .....meaning the song has not got the high quality work a song would receive, which a studio recording can produce

Robert that really is no excuse, Dusty in the early days would never allow a live recording to be released but years later at the RAH during her concert she sang Lose Again and she could never have bettered it in a studio, it's beautiful and it's now on several of her releases including dvd.ROBERT M. wrote:The trouble with Elvi's version of You Don't Have To Say You Love Me .......is that the song was recorded "live" .....meaning the song has not got the high quality work a song would receive, which a studio recording can produce

Karl, maybe some singers sound very good singing "live" ............but Elvis released a few "live" singles and album tracks and maybe they were not quite the quality required
.............I think Dusty had the perfect voice for live recordings

Have you seen Elvis singing Unchained Melody and playing piano? It's great but I know what you mean about singing live. I liked MIchael Jackson in The Jackson5 but he never impressed me as an adult singing live as you couldn't hear him behind a wet newspaper, anyway let's get back to what this thread is for!
