JACK JONES CONCERT REVIEW

Post by karl » Mon Feb 15, 2016 12:58 pm

Jack and his band ended their short tour in Edinburgh last night, right on time at 7.30 the house lights dimmed and Jack walked on.
The first half was all Sinatra songs, for the first few songs he seemed to be struggling a little and coughing in between songs but as the show went on his voice got better and better (I think he had a slight cold) and he did actually say jokingly he had dust in his throat. During the song Teach Me Tonight he sang the same line twice (The X, Y Z of it) he then playfully slapped the side of his head a few times.

After the interval he came back on and did his own material and for the second time he came offstage into the auditorium only this time he walked right around the stalls and danced with some ladies in the audience. He then said the reason for last year's postponement was his wife Elenora had surgery for cancer and added she is a bowel cancer survivor so she waved to the audience and received a loud applause.

A screen was at the rear of the stage showing videos of Frank Sinatra and later in the show he showed a short clip of his grand-daughter singing " I WIll Always Love You"

Jack seems a very happy man these days and for me the best came almost at the end when he did songs from Man Of La Mancha ending with The Impossible Dream, the power in his voice was amazing and that drew a big applause and shouts from the audience. Infact on many songs Jack's mike was well away from his mouth and you could still hear every word.

Jack mentioned it was Valentine's day so he sang My Funny Valentine.

Several times he said how much they had enjoyed this tour and he liked the King's theatre adding he didn't think he'd played there before (he hadn't), he also indicated they will be back - I hope so!

In closing I bought Jack's latest cd before the show started, quite confusing as you have a choice of two sleeves for the same album!

Come back again Jack, you are welcome anytime.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed Jacks concert Karl. There are not too many singers left like Jack who can deliver those timeless classics. There have been a few of those singers of Jacks era who have also made senior moment mistakes on stage. Sinatra was typical in those later years and had props standing by in the wings. Al Martino forgot the middle of a song on a couple of occasions. but we are a forgiving bunch. :D :D

L & H you don't have to be a certain age to forget lyrics, Dusty often did it but she was a master of filling in. Sometimes she'd sing a line of the second verse on the first or failing that make something up.
I think it must be hard when you are doing a whole concert to remember everything, when I saw Frank Sinatra he forgot some lyrics to I Write The Songs but unless you knew the song well (As I did) you would never have guessed, he just moved his mike away then came in on the next line. When all is said and done they are only human .

That's very true Karl.
Talking of Dusty, Today on Nick Muir's programme he played her recording of "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me " and I remember so well when that record was first released, the times I listened to that song on the radio, for the life of me I couldn't catch on to the words of the following line .... Just be close at hand,

Yes L&H that line stumped a lot of people, years ago one of my colleagues had a great sense of humour he used to sing "You Don't Have To Say I'm Lovely Just Because I Am. He was also a good mimic.
