Don Black on Radio 2
Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Don played Matt singing Oscar winning song Days of Wine and Roses…………….the show was dedicated to Oscar winning songs

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Don played ……... "wasn't he good"...……….. Matt singing one of his best ever recordings ………….Rogers and Hammersteins song from The King and I ……………..Hello Young Lovers ………….great final note

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Not one of my favourite selections tonight but Hello Young Lovers, a 'matchless' version superbly sung and as you say Robert WHAT a final note

I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Don this week played another great "marvellous" Matt ballad Ebb Tide
…………...this weeks show featured all British singers ………..I was expecting Don to play a song by Engelbert Humperdinck...……...but he didn't, and I can't recall Don playing any Englebert songs before...……. I wonder why that is ? …………...also when Don plays his weekly Matt song he never mentions those brilliant music arrangements by Johnny Spence !!

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
We agree Robert about Johnny Spence and that he and Matt did not continue to work together and who knows what we might have missed out on. The arrangements by Johnny on the CD "Born Free" are just great.
Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Yes Maureen and Harry, Johnny jumped ship to work with Tom Jones ……….shame for Matt.
On Sunday Don played a song by Kingston-upon-Hulls very own David Whitfield
……………..but he didn't play songs by two other well known singers from Hull...…….Ronnie Hilton or Joe Longthorne !

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Re David Whitfield when I first met my to be husband John he had every 78 of his.Never really my cup of tea

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
He was probably the Alfie Boe or Michael Ball of his time Sandra
……………I was a bit too young to remember David Whitfield then, but I did buy a couple of his CDs a few years ago...…………...Cara Mia was an outstanding and even emotional recording of David's which was at 1# in the charts for weeks on end
………………here it is ………….https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LE9pRwVYo5k (it starts after 6 seconds)………...

David Whitfield is on one of the Wheeltappers & Social Club's dvd's and he was great - what a personality!

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
I loved the song that Don played of Matt's last Sunday Ebb Tide and he also said that Matt was his favourite.
He as mentioned Johnnie Spence odd times, I think.

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
A wonderful version by Matt.
Incidentally I don't like the new Radio 2 player. You used to see a list of what had been played but no more.
