Don Black on Radio 2
Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Thanks Christine

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Don played "matchless Matt" singing Hoagy Carmichael's The Nearness From You ………….from the Matt sings Hoagy Carmichael CD that Don relies on heavily
……………..Don did actually mention Johnny Spence before playing the song, saying "the album was produced by the great Sir George Martin and arranged by the equally brilliant Johnny Spence"

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
I said I thought Don had mentioned Johnnie before and he has.
Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Don played Matt singing If I Never Sing Another Song tonight…………...but I cannot tell you what Don said before or after he played the song …………...I set my set box top to record the show which it did, but when I started to play the programme there was no sound, which being a radio programme wasn't very helpful
…………!!

I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Oh dear Robert a lovely choice of music tonight as you will hear on the iplayer.Matchless of course and the gist that Matt loved singing the song.It has been sung by Shirley Bassey,Sammy Davis,Frankie Laine and many more.He thought their was something primal about the song about a famous star whose great days are slipping away.

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
I enjoyed the song by Carmen McRae on last Sunday's show. I may try and explore her music more.

Carmen McRae was on shows like Parkinson a lot in the 70's Jonjon wrote:I enjoyed the song by Carmen McRae on last Sunday's show. I may try and explore her music more.

Thanks. Is it my imagination or does Don Black deliberately choose to play obscure songs by certain artists but bog-standard ones by others? He often plays unusual recordings by Tony Bennett, for eaxample, but always seems to play Johnny Mathis's "chestnuts" - A Certain S mile and Misty, for example - and rarely any of Johnny's more obscure tracks.

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Good point Jon, you could be right about that ……….he will play an obscure track out of the blue, but usually he plays the same old songs that artists are well known for ………….especially Matts songs with the very odd exception...…..Don should know Matt recorded hundreds of songs, and with him being Matts manager he should explore many other of Matts recordings to play on his show...………..but he doesn't

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
About three years ago I bought A Yourview box, which is similar to a Feeview box or Sky box ................the good thing about them is that youy can hold, rewind or fast forward live tv programmes or recorded programmes............I always tape the Don Black show and listen to it later on...............it had worked perfectly up until the past two weeks ..........it does record the show but there has been no sound to listen to...............I know you have to sign up now to use the BBC Iplayer ............the Beeb are getting very pernickety, I thought they may be stopping potential none tv licence listeners from accessing radio shows ............I'll keeping taping the Don Black show and hopefully it will work at some pointkarl wrote:What are you taping it on Robert, cassette, dvd or tivo box?ROBERT M. wrote:Don played Matt singing From Russia With Love tonight, but as happened last week, I taped the programme but there was no sound again...…...I wonder if the beeb are sabotaging radio shows as the tv programmes I tape are ok!!

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
can't you access it on your PC on the Beeb's website?
Re: Don Black on Radio 2
If you try to listen through the BBC website you get his message https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bg1njg#play (press "listen now" and you will see what I mean)…………...I want to know why my set top box does not have sound now when recording a radio show …………...as I said it might be something to do with making sure people have a licence and not getting the radio shows for free !
