Watched a film called Davy last night with Harry Secombe. Really good film, and he even sang a bit in it as well. 8)

No, I haven't seen that one Gray, but I've thought about getting it. Is it good? Watched "Sparrows Can't Sing" last night with Barbara Windsor, that was quite a good film with a lot of familiar faces including Roy Kinnear, Arthur Mullard and Queenie Watts.

Hi John,

Yes, it was OK, a couple of good giggles in it.
Once again, I am struggling to place another British 'B' film you've watched...Sparrows Can't Sing.
I do not believe I've seen it.

I remember "Sparrows can't sing"--was that Barbara Windsor's first film--she was very young anyway--not sure if I am getting confused, but was there a Lionel Bart connection ??

Yes, I think it was her first film Marian, and yes, Lionel Bart did the music, and Barbara sung the theme tune. Quite a good film about a sailor coming home from sea after two years away to find his wife has left home to live with someone else.
Last night watched a really good film with a very young Tony Britton (Fern's father) and Sylvia Sims called "The Birthday Present" about a toy salesman whom whilst abroad in Germany smuggled a watch in a childrens toy (it was a present for his wife) and got caught at customs back home in London and the events that occurred afterwards.

Hi Gray, I must admit a lot of the films I mention I haven't seen myself before, some are really good, some average and the odd one not so keen on at all, just trial and error.

Watched the DVD -Nancy Goes to Rio- today, made in 1950 and starring Ann Sothern and Jane Powell (from the MGM box set I bought last year) :)
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

Last night watched George Formby in "Keep Your Seats Please". Really funny, but then George Formby was always brilliant.

Watched a film called "Now and Forever" with Janette Scott (Thora Hird's daughter) last night. Another good film about a young girl who falls in love with a car mechanic. I think Janette was married to Mel Torme at one time.

Janette Scott was indeed married to Mel Torme-and there were 2 children from that marriage-I often wonder if either of them can sing.

I remember Janette Scott as a child actress-she started young like Petula Clark. She was such a pretty girl, which always seemed strange as Thora Hird--much as I really liked her--was always very plain, even as a young girl--and in fact I remember seeing her wedding photo and thinking she was the plainest bride I have ever seen.

But I know full well, that looks are not everything, not by a long way.

I thought Thora Hird was wonderful, a brilliant actress and very funny. Loved her performances in Last Of The Summer Wine as Edie, especially when she was behing the wheel of the car.

I totally agree John--Thora was a truly lovely lady---not in looks, but in character.
