I am going to show my age here---when I was a little girl we had no Tv--not till I was about 11 , so 3 times a week, my mum, my sister Carole and I, went to the pictures--once to the Savoy, just down the road, once to the Gaumont in Shepherds Bush, and once to the Odeon in Hammersmith. They each showed a different main film, plus a "B" movie. I also went to Satuday morning pictures---and on Sunday afternoon at the Savoy, they would always show a different film---so I saw lots and lots of films when I was young.

Now, I just cannot remember the last time I went to the Cinema--but it was a very long time ago.

I enjoyed Marian's cinema memories too.
I'm sure all of us of a certain age have similar stories to Marian's about the number of times we went to "the pictures" as they were then called.
Our local cinemas, The Workmen's Hall and The Grand, changed the programme twice a week and always with a B movie too. Some of these were more exciting than the main film as they were often murder mysteries and often in black and white, that made them seem more scary.
I suppose films were the main entertainment for everyone in those days. I didn't go to Saturday morning 'flicks' but Peter did as a boy, and remembers being riveted to the adventures of Flash Gordon, as well as many Western films that often followed on from the previous week, so you just had to go back week after week. :D :D Lots of cartoons too in those days.
I think I saw every film that was produced in the fifties, and mostly remember them all. :D
Fish and chips on the way home, and a good night was had by all!
Marian

When I was in my 20's I absolutely loved being scared by the Hammer Horror
films and went to see Christopher Lee or Peter Cushing at every opportunity.
John told me later that he hated every moment of them and only took me because he loved me-aah.
Watching them now they seem so dated and I wonder why I ever liked them so much. :?

Last night watched "Where There's A Will" with Kathleen Harrison and Leslie Dwyer, about a family who are left a farm in a will. Another good little comedy.

Anyone interested in Dirk Bogarde movies? I used to really like him in my younger days, especially as Doctor Sparrow in the 'Doctor' films.
I have quite a number of his films on video and DVD.

Yes, I liked the "Doctor" films Marian. Always liked James Robertson Justice as Sir Lancelot as well.

No Robert, a friend of mine has a large collection of films, mostly taped from the TV over the years and I just pay for the discs really. He sends me a few each month, he has a list and I just choose what I want each month. :D

I liked Dirk Bogarde when he started out--as in the "Doctor "films, but later on, some of his films were quite weird, I thought

Watched the Mel Gibson directed Apocolypto on DVD last night. The film is about tribal warfare and has "subtitles" all the way through..............but it is a terrific movie (different but extremely good) :)

I enjoyed Apocolypto also, Robert.

Marian, I am fascinated by your comment "I think I saw every film in the 50's" - you sound just like me!

I sometimes think I was born into the wrong decade!
How I wish I could of experienced the sights and sounds of this era first hand.
