Charlie Williams.

Post by Lena & Harry Smith » Mon Sep 04, 2006 10:25 pm

Comedian Charlie Williams has passed away in the Barnsley General Hospital at the age of 78. He had been suffering from Parkinsond disease and dementia for several years.
Charlie played for Doncaster Rovers in 1955 and played as centre back wearing the number 5 shirt for 5 years before going into show business. He was the first black comedian to make the big time in the uk.
He joined the show "The Comedians " in the 70s and addressed everyone with his own know cheeky grin and his catchphrase " Now Me Old Flower.
Charlie was liked and respected and will be sadly missed.
Eric Hall's programme on Sunday was a tribute to Charlie Williams.

Hi Lena and Harry-it was sad to hear about Charlie Williams passing away, and how ill he had been.

He was certainly an original-I remember him from "The Comedians"--then he went on to host--was it "The Golden Shot"--or something similar??

Marian, Yes it was "The Golden Shot" and "It's Charlie Williams " and "The Charlie Williams Show" were two more shows that he hosted in 1972 and 73.
He was also awarded the MBE in 1999 for his charity work. :)

Yes, sad to hear that Charlie Williams had died and how ill he'd been for such a long time. Very funny man and a pretty decent footballer in his time too by all accounts when he played for Doncaster Rovers. Pleased to see that the Rovers will be holding a minutes silence in his memory this afternoon.
