Is it really?? I've just tried to sing them both and they aren't really alike are they..

I'm listening to "Memories" sung by Elvis at the moment, one of my favourite Elvis songs, I never liked him in the very early days I was a bit of a Cliff fan then, I fell in love with him during "Summer Holiday", (the film that is...not during my summer holidays) while he was singing "The Next Time":D Then Elvis did his "Come Back Tour"

and I forgot all about Cliff.

I have very fond memories of "Summer Holiday" as our mum and dad took us all to see it in 1963

Well "Summer holiday" is one of those songs that you recognise from the first introductory notes, and Cliff is a Matt Monro fan so we can even forgive him for his "Millenium Prayer

On my first trip to UK many many years ago, when posters of Cliff "Dressed For The Occasion" adorned the walls of the tube stations, I stood outside his house hoping to catch a glimpse of him. A friend brought me there and I was jumping up and down outside his fence. The things we do when we were young.......

Aww Terence, did you get a glimpse of him then? it does work at times though, my cousins who are from Liverpool once went and did the same thing outside Paul Mcartney's fathers house, Paul was there and they were invited in!...what a story for the grandkids!

My twin sister and I used to spend our summers in Liverpool in our early teenage years and were also taken along to see if Paul would be there and invite us in, but sadly we were'nt so lucky

we did get to have some great times at the Cavern though

Unfortunately that evening there was no sign of Cliff.
On a subsequent visit to UK for a Liza Minnelli concert, there were stars galore at the lobby : Tom Selleck (I remember his face was very red), Barbra Streisand who was in UK for pre-production work on Yentl (I remember her nose was large and greasy), Roger Moore (he looked really old, not at all like in the Bond films) & David Essex (he looked handsome, almost like his "Rock On" album cover).

Hi Terence---you do not have to be young to do these stupid things!! On my last trip to USA, my friends and I had just a morning free in LA, before flying on to Vegas to take in 5 JM concerts We decided to hire a stretch Limo [between 4 of us it was a bargain]--and the driver took us where-ever we wanted to go. So we got him to take us up to Beverley Hills, to find the House where Johnny Mathis lived. We knew he would not be there--but on the other hand--you never know... . We had been there on a previous holiday, but the house had changed-a porch had been added, a new outside light. Well, we got some great photos! . We carried on to San Francisco, a friend took us to see JM's school-and he took us inside, plus where he was brought up in San Francisco. On our return to LA, we saw again, JM's star, near Sunset Boulevard, and we were also invited to visit the new offices in Burbank--much swisher than the old offices on the corner of Sunset and Vine. We had already done 4 similar trips in California, plus New England and Toronto, but it was just as exciting. And if I got the chance to go again, I would love it just as much.!!
Let's face it, you can be a groupie at ANY age--it's not reserved for teenagers

By the way Terence, I did not know you were keen on Cliff!! Or has that worn off now??

Hi Diane--my husband really loved the music of the Beatles--I liked it too--but I envy you your trips to "The Cavern".

I saw the Beatles only once--my young sister who was only 7 at the time adored the Beatles--this was in the early 60's. My friend and I surprised her with a ticket for a concert at Hammersmith Apollo.

Well, all I can remember is everyone screaming--then when the Beatles appeared everyone screamed louder--then when they started singing everyone screamed louder still.

We could not hear a note they were singing, throughout the whole concert-
but it was a memorable experience---and my sister was really happy!!!

These days my sister is into Westlife!!

I was never into Cliff. However I was taken to the cinemas for his movies The Young Ones & Summer Holiday because my sisters loved him. The thing that
I liked about Cliff was the way he combed his hair in those 2 movies. I was quite sad when the hair "fell" as he aged.

I like the special timbre in his voice like Elvis, Matt & Peggy Lee. The Cliff album that I like is the live one titled Help It Along.

With the advent of videos and now DVDs, I have viewed some of his concerts and I am amazed that he has so much energy for his fast songs. His showmanship is excellent.

You're dead right Robert, at least many of us of the middle age and maturer years who know the true meaning of professionalism and star quality have made up our own minds about singers etc that are good and who really have got star quality. We only follow talent, and only buy what we know is talent.

We don't get pressurised or brainwashed by the media, the music pundits or charts to purchase music that is supposedly good but ain't.
