CDs skipping

Recently I have found that many newer CDs skip at the slightest incline or bump while I'm driving. The old CDs work perfectly or rarely skip.

Is this because the newer CDs have additional things on them to prevent copying? Some new ones are okay, but most skip terribly and they are brand new and contain no scratches. A terrible one is the latest Coldplay CD. And my new CD single of The Third Degree performing Mercy is skipping terribly and I'm quite upset about it. There will be periods of 10 seconds where it won't even play until I stop at a light.

This is an odd one. As far as I am aware there is no difference in any pressed cd (that is as opposed to a CD-R) compared to how hey were manufactured in the early 80's

Put basically, it's a very this layer of aluminum with holes stamped into it (the digital 1's & 0's) sandwiched between two layers of plastic.

Copy protection on CD's (which seems to have died out in the majority of cases) was encoded into the digital 'subcode' and should not make it skip.

Car CD Players are odd because they actually read ahead (Usually about 10 seconds) so they can buffer the sound just incase the laser jumps - it will automatically find the place it was at if it does and this should be seamless to the ear.

I can only guess at two things

1. The Cd's are badly pressed - but if they play without fault elsewhere this may not be the case

2. The Skip Protection system on your Car CD Player is faulty.
