Looks like you are a Michael Ball fan, Pam. I saw him live in concert, and he was just great !!
I have also seen this guy live in concert-and yes, he was great too.

Mariana,
I love Michael Ball. I have several of his CD's but have never seen him in concert. Wish I could see him. Maybe I will have to come visit the UK and go to some concert

"CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU" - MATT MONRO (Tom Jones' Version is a close second!) What do you think??
"THE CHRISTMAS SONG" (Chestnuts Roasting....) & "MONA LISA" - NAT KING COLE
"MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS" & "THAT'S AMORE" - DEAN MARTIN

Candy Man - Sammy Davis, Jr.
Re: SONGS THAT CANNOT BE COVERED BY ANOTHER SINGER
Henry--I have to disagree on "The Christmas Song"--lots of great versions of this wonderful song--but the best surely has to be from the man who composed it---MEL TORME.

Hey There - Sammy Davis Jnr - (Rosemary Clooneys ain't bad either)

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Don't Laugh At Me----------- Norman Wisdom
Re: SONGS THAT CANNOT BE COVERED BY ANOTHER SINGER
I never knew you were such a Mel Torme fan, Marian. You have now mentioned him twice in this thread.
I agree that The Christmas Song can be covered by others. I love the version by Helen Merrill. Mel Torme makes a special appearance on the recording.

Re: SONGS THAT CANNOT BE COVERED BY ANOTHER SINGER
I really like Mel Torme--have lots of his recordings.

Re: SONGS THAT CANNOT BE COVERED BY ANOTHER SINGER

I'm struggling with this game as I like many songs performed by more than one artist. This has probably already been listed:
People - Barbra Streisand
I know Matt Monro did a respectable version, but Barbra owns this song.
Re: SONGS THAT CANNOT BE COVERED BY ANOTHER SINGER
Hi Paul--yes, I named Mel Torme singing "The Piccolino", as my fave Mel song--but there are lots more I could have chosen-"That's all" is another fave from Mel.

Who'd have thought ABBA would be controversial
I thought my comment about STEPS being better than the Bee Gees and Diana Ross would have been more provocative!
Paul - I almost forget that those Erasure songs are ABBA tracks as Erasure made them sound so much their own - so I can see what you are saying there. The other covers you refer to were part of a 'Thank ABBA for the music' show that the ITV network made here in the UK about 10 years ago. A lot of the teen-pop bands of the day took part.
Sandra - I love Michael Balls voice, saw him in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang when it was on at the Palladium and he was fantastic in that. But I think that with the 'Winner takes it all', it has to be Agnetha Fältskog. Looking at Wikipedia, there have been about 80 covers of the song. The reason I think this has to be sung by ABBA is that it came in their twilight years, and I thought as a child that it was referring to the breakdown of their relationships within the group, which made me very sad! Thats since been denied by Benny & Bjorn but there was a real emotion in the lyrics, song and even the video.
Incidentally, McFly did a brilliant accoustic cover of it!

I never liked Tragedy by the Bee Gees and never knew Chain Reaction by Diaha Ross as it was never released in the US or it was a major flop. So I am fine with the Steps' versions.
I have finally thought of one that I feel strongly about. I almost walked at of the theatre when I saw the Dreamgirls film as the cover by the American Idol contestant was one of the worst things I've ever heard.
And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going -- absolutely no one should sing it but the original, the wonderful Jennifer Holliday
