Sorry Pam if we confused you--I thought that "Mallory Towers" that Don mentioned was from a favourite childhood book of mine by Enid Blyton--which reminded me of the other series she wrote about "St Clare's". they were both fictional schools for young girls--about 11 - 16 years old I would guess.
The big Ferris Wheel on the Thames is called "The London Eye", and despite problems and misgivings at the start, it is now just so popular and a huge success--and in fact many large cities in the Uk now have their own version.
I have been up twice--once during the day, and once at night-as WI outings--they were both spectacular, but the nighttime one was also completely magical.
The first time I went on, when we got right to the top, I phoned home to tell George all about the wonderful view from up there--and he asked if they allowed us to get out and walk around !!!!!
To comtinue this thread-I will try to think of somewhere that you will have heard of---NELSON'S COLUMN in Trafalgar Square.
