Hi All

Robert - Nat's version of Autumn Leaves is absolutely tremendous, sends shivers down my spine. Thinking about it, add to that his Nature Boy, When I Fall In Love, and oh, just about everything he recorded.

Isn't it amazing how we all differ in tastes?
I adore September Song, yet others find it dreary.

Just been reading elsewhere in the forum how some of us are fans of Robbie Williams' Swing When You're Winning - and I am not a fan of his attempt at singing these songs at all.

Wierd eh?
At least we agree on some things, our passion for Matt Monro and Leeds Utd getting promoted this season

Hi all---Oh yes, "Autumn in New York" is a great song--not at all dreary!
A great version by Johnny Mathis.

When my friends and I went to New York one September, I had key-rings made for us all, engraved with "Autumn in New York", backed with "I'm in a New York State of Mind".

I luv this one too, especially Sinatra's version. Another song I like for autumn is 'Moonlight in Vermont'. If Im ever in a piano bar, I always request it and normally it gets played.

A nice souvenir Marian the key -rings. Quite a few have recorded these two numbers and all are excellent, but it's Sinatra's every time for us particularly these two.

Marian and all - I'd be happy to play Autumn Leaves, but I doubt the Hayes Premier Travel Inn will have a piano! I don't think I'd feel right playing at the theatre. But I would accompany Gray on a rendition of Hello Young Lovers or Real Live Girl!! (Just kidding!

Gray and all - I'm pleased that there's someone else who doesn't care for the Robbie Williams' swing music. But his Something Beautiful, Feel, and Angels are three of the best recordings and songs of the past decade. Now ... if I could only understand your use of the word "promoted"!

Everyone - Our late night TV talk show host for many years, Johnny Carson, would always joke with singers about how he would get Autumn In New York confused with Moonlight In Vermont. He would sing them and then mix them. They are quite similar---especially the first lines.

And just to include the excellent September Song again in this series - I believe Willie Nelson recorded the song. I haven't heard it in years, but I think he sang the opening verse, which I also love. I've added the opening verse to my version (which I play only in September), but during the chorus I think of Matt Monro's emotional recording. And then I always play his version driving home and I sing along. It's one of the best recordings ever!

Hello Paul. Gray means a team that is "promoted" go up to a higher division, the following season, as they will have been promoted. The next division for Leeds United, a former "giant" club, would be the "highest" division The Premiership, where all the top clubs play ie... Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea etc.....a division is another name for the league that teams play in, ie.. second division, third division.

But Gray, you have made a mistake in your post haven't you?? didn't you mean to say "relegated" this season

For Paul, than means demotion to the next lowest league

I'm not familiar with September Song though I know both Matt and Johnny Mathis recorded it, I just haven't heard their versions - yet.

I do agree with Mariana44 about Earth, Wind and Fire's September: lively and makes me want to dance. I sometime play it to cheer me up. In fact I like a lot of their records. It may surprise some of you to know that the Musical Director of the Royal Opera House, Antonio Pappano, chose it as one of his Desert Island Discs when he was on the show (in addition to a Tony Bennett song as well, of course, as some opera).

What do people think of TV theme tunes? I have a CD of them and I love the theme music to Danger Man and also Strange Report, which used to star Antony Quayle as a detective in London who drove around in a black cab; the theme music has a nice smoky saxophone part in the middle. I also like the theme song from "White Horses", and it was recently released on a CD of girl singers from the 60s.

Hi jon, I adore "White Horses" from the 60's TV series. Sung by Jackie (Lee), it melt's your heart listening to it, absolutely awesome, a great 60's memory for me

Wow - this thread has changed again - now into TV themes! There is an album called Cult Royale that has most of the 60's and 70s classics. My favourite from that era would be the Champions - by Jackie Trents other half, Tony Hatch! A very upbeat, swirly kind of tune.

And on the subject of September, how about 'Come September' from the Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee film of the same name?

'See you in September' - one of the slower tracks off the 'American Grafitti' soundtrack. One of favourite albums, with 'Sixteen Candles', 'Come go with me' being other favourites of mine. But ,y tip top track off that album would have to be 'The Great Imposter' by the Fleetwoods

Hi Mike--how could I forget "Come September" with the lovely Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee---great song and a fun film--really nostalgic---especially since the gorgeous Sandra died fairly recently. I have their biography written by their son, and Sandra still looked good for many years after she stopped making films.

I know that song--"See you in September" but cannot remember who sang it.

Marian - Earlier I stated that The Happenings (from New Jersey) sang See You In September in the 1960s. I don't know if it was a hit in the UK or whether someone else recorded it. It's also not at all slow. It has a great beat, so perhaps the American Graffiti soundtrack features a different version.

Robert - Thanks for the explanation of promotions. I didn't know any of that. I've heard of the Premiership League.

Jon - You really need to hear September Song by Matt Monro. I thought you had purchased the The Singer's Singer 4 CD set; it's on there as well as the excellent Softly As I Leave You compilation (track 20).

My favourite two TV themes are Hawaii Five-O and Route 66. This is not Bobby Troup's Route 66, but a different song recorded by Nelson Riddle. It's a great driving tune. Henry Mancini's Peter Gunn was also great. I don't know if any of these shows from the 1960s were shown in the UK.

Hi Paul--Hawaii Five-0 was very popular over here for a long time. I watched it often. It is sometimes repeated on one of the satellite channels---but it's not the same! Well, it is the same---it just seems different--dated I suppose, you could say. Which of course it is. Like "Bonanza"--I loved that programme--but seeing it repeated on satellite was a big disappointment!!

I do not know about the other shors--is "Route 66" the same as the song"Get your kicks on Route 66" that song fascinated me--especially when I got my atlas out and marked the names of the places in the song--all in correct order--St Louis; Joplin Missouri:Oklahoma City:Amarillo;Gallup, New Mexico:Flagstaff, Arizona: Don't forget Winona:
Kingdom: Barstow: San Bernadino. My atlas has now got a red line marking all the towns on "Route 66".

No, the Route 66 song you're referring to is by Bobby Troup (recall our discussion: he was married to Julie London) and made most popular by Nat King Cole. The TV show's theme was a totally different song: an instrumental written by Nelson Riddle. It had a real sound of crime drama song. It was just great.

I've done many trips on the old Route 66, as have many Europeans and Asians. There's nothing quite like that in Europe and Asia, so you are fascinated by it. Actually there's nothing quite like it in the US anymore, as everything basically looks the same now: it's one big strip mall after another with the same chain stores and restaurants. I've heard Milton Keynes is like that, but I've never been there.

While Robert is still resting, let me correct your "Kingdom". The town is Arizona is actually Kingman. But you get an "A" in Geography and Music class for all the other towns which are in perfect order!

Thanks for mentioning Bonanza. It also had a great theme with a real Western feel.

Now, how am I gonna work September Song into this discussion again? Have I mentioned just how wonderful the Matt Monro recording is of this song?
