Just got out the album "Everthing Must Go" all great numbers, a truly classic album. Three songs I would rate among the best are.....

The Girl Who Wanted To Be God..............as mentioned by jon

Elvis Impersonator...............quite unusual, but rather good

No Surface All Feeling.............great song and great melody 8) 8)

I might play it tonight...................haven't played it for years now............
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

I know what you mean about Elvis Impersonator - it is a good track because in that it tells a great story, but not that easy to sing in the shower!

Just love the guitar riffs at the beginning of the song, and all the way through, plus James's great singing also 8) 8)

Robert, some of those just mentioned we have to say, haven't all found their way in to our library, and it's great to read the different opinions and gives us an idea of what good judges we were to avoid some of them

I think James Dean Bradfield has one of the great voices in rock: so clear and distinctive. I don't have any of their albums, but I really liked the second single (Empty Souls) from the Manics' last album. I loved the B side (All Alone Now) ever more. I hope you have that CD single, Jon. All Alone Now is a great song and too good for a B side.

I will do my best to forget that Shakira has been mentioned in the Matt Monro forum. She must have the most annoying voice ever---in Spanish and English. Kudos to Radio 1 for never playing Hips Don't Lie, except during the chart countdown shows. Trust me, Marian, Lena, and Harry -- you aren't missing anything by not knowing Shakira's music.

No one commented on Razorlight. I heard they were on Michael Parkinson recently. Did anyone see that programme?

I don't know whether its purely a European phenomenon, but summer chart music usually throws up the likes of S**k**a (just so I don't offend Paul  ), because its the stuff that a lot of the kids run out and buy when they come back of holiday, having danced the night away to it in Ibiza, or Playas de Las Americas or wherever!

Didn't catch Parkinson with Razorlight - but did see Elton John and Bernie Taupin who were very entertaining

Paul, the point about liking songs by say the Scissor Sisters and SHAKIRA, is that they are fun songs we can sing along to, which makes some days a little bit brighter. Admittedly they are throw away songs in the end, but fun for a while

I guess I am thought of as a "stick in the mud"! It may be true, but I'm very particular and serious about music. It has to be good. Hips Don't Lie is a mess. Filthy/Gorgeous is a poor attempt at disco. If I want to listen to a fun song, I'll listen to:

Real Live Girl by Matt Monro
Shanghai by Doris Day
A Night To Remember by Shalamar
Everybody Everybody by Black Box
Fantasy by Earth Wind & Fire
LeFreak by Chic
Square Biz by Teena Marie
Let Me Entertain You by Robbie Williams
When A Woman by Gabrielle or
Mind Trick by Jamie Cullum

Paul, I am not saying that all the chart songs are any good, in fact most of them are rubbish. But now and again a particular song is played on the radio that we grow quite fond of for a while, we then discard them. You are very serious about music Paul, as some of the songs in your list are very serious pieces of music, not all of which I could call fun songs
My fun songs are definitely different to your fun songs.

Now I understand the difference, Robert. I don't discard any songs. I'm listening to Pick of the Pops from 1982 and they are playing Pass The Dutchie by Musical Youth. That is definitely a "fun song". I loved that song very much and I still love hearing it. The same goes for The Name Game by Shirley Ellis from the 1960s. So I don't discard anything with music!

I strongly urge you all to use the "listen again" feature and listen to last Sunday's Pick of the Pops. It includes many excellent songs: And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going by Jennifer Holliday, Love Come Down by Evelyn King (whom I saw performing live last Friday in Washington and she's sounding better than ever!), and the greatest rap recording ever: The Message by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. (I've mentioned this recording previously during the rap discussion.)

Paul

glad you agree about JDB from the Manics. I agree "Empty Souls" was a great song (I have three different versions; the single that was released omitted, I think, the controversial line about "the twin towers" which were included on the album version) and yes I do have the B side you mention. Actually after my posts here yesterday, I went into HMV on Oxford Street and saw that Nicky Wire, the Manics' bass player and lyricist, has a new solo album out now, but I'm holding back on buying it as he isn't really regarded as a singer in the way JDB is. I think I'd have to hear the album first before deciding whether to buy it. You also mention Earth, Wind and Fire. I'm also a big fan. Indeed it's great to see such a wide range of musical likes on this forum (though "Pass the Dutchie"???). Now, anyone for Zemlinsky...
