Redundancies=lay offs! :( The big employers are insurance company Norwich Union and Nestle, and I think they is a lot of restructuring going on which means that big job losses are on the cards. Thats quite a list of towns you have there Paul. Margaret Thatcher came from Grantham, which is in Lincolnshire. You may like to think of adding Newcastle upon Tyne on to it - undergoing a massive renaissance with some spectacular architecture, old and new. Also the new Sage Concert Hall has just opened. BTW - you have only listed English towns in your list of Top UK towns - better add some Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Ireland destiantions on to it, or the colonials might get annoyed!  Edinburgh is gorgeous, and Glasgow is supposed to be well worth a visit. Might want to think about Cardiff too! Other than that some lovely places on the list and I've not been to all of them myself.

Mike

Thanks for your kind comments regaridng York, and don't forget Terry Confectioners & the Railway Industry that has been decimated job-wise in York. :(

Paul, anytime you fancy a visit to York, we'll go see the sights and I'll take you to a Leeds Utd game. (Believe me, they need all the support they can get at the moment) ;)

Hi Gray, sorry you've had a bad day at work, but talking of Ken Dodd and his Yorkshire Born......saying. If anything can put a smile on your face it's Ken's video... An Audience With. He is brilliant, great timing and so funny. We know we've talked about him before, but he can often cure the blues

Hi Lena & Harry

I LOVE that Ken Dodd performance as well! :D
In actual fact most of the gags from that show were also used in his tour round about the same time.
I saw him in a theatre in York and when he talked about the "husband quaking in bed" waiting for "she who must be obeyed" to finish watching Prisoner in Cell Block H downstairs (do you remember the bit?) - I swear I fell off my seat I was laughing so hard.
I was absolutely helpless with laughter.
Genius. :)

Thanks everyone for Grantham ... I just couldn't remember it. I believe there's a town between Lincoln and Grantham that also interests me. Can't remember the name now either, but it may begin with an S.

Thanks for the explanation of redundancies -- sorry to hear about the problems in York and other places.

I've been to Cardiff and Caerphilly in Wales, Michael. I would like to visit Snowdonia one day. Yes, I am interested in Scotland and Northern Ireland also. And I'll add Newcastle upon Tyne to my list and combine it with Durham.

Thanks for the offer of York tour guide, Gray, and especially the Leeds Utd game. I've never been to a football game before!

Do Ken Dodds videos/DVDs last as long as his shows do, about 6 hours ??

Mike, you cannot say that about Hull, especially if you don't know the area or the people :P :P

Hi Paul-Lots of great places on your list to visit. I live just 7 miles from Tunbridge Wells--unfortunately it's past its best now. The Pantiles is still there--but only visitors go there--it can be deserted sometimes-still looks good though--apart from that , it is just another town !

But if you get there I'll join you, and treat us to afternoon tea-or something.

The railway museum sounds wonderful. But should I remove York from the list because of its redundancies? And what are redundancies?
Paul, when you're in Bristol, cross over the bridge (5 pounds!!) and get yourself to Cardiff too. Beautiful city, great shops and oh, and quite a good football team too! ( Grantham is the place you're looking for, (Maggie Thatcher)
