What are your favourite Christmas Songs?!

Post by Hilary » Fri Dec 01, 2006 12:15 pm

Hi Everyone,

Well it is the 1st December so I thought it would be a good idea to give the Christmas songs a mention.

There are so many that it is difficult to know where to start!
My favourites are "Mary's boy child," [By Harry B. not Boney M]
"White christmas" by Bing, "The Christmas song" by Nat and my all time favourite, "Merry Christmas darling" by the Carpenters.

So, what does everyone else like to listen too at Christmas?
maybe the Village people have recorded a SPECIAL Christmas version of "YMCA" Paul would just love that wouldn't he?!

To be honest, I hate Xmas songs generally. The only one I've ever cared for is Mud's "It'll be Lonely This Christmas".

Hilary, although recorded by many, we are sure that Bing Crosby's version of "White Christmas" will always top most peoples list at this time of year.
Just for starters..... I'll be home for Christmas ( Al Martino
Have yourself A Merry Little Christmas ( Frank Sinatra.
It's the most wonderful Time Of The Year (Andy Williams

Hilary, we've just about got the actions for YMCA, it would be hilarious or even disastrous anything about Christmas added to that.

It would be great to hear Matt sing this song with his lovely deep
voice . Did he ever record it. I love the Andy Williams/David Bowie version

I, too, like Merry Xmas Darling by the Carpenters, they also do a superb version of Do You Hear What I hear. I like a lot of Perry Como's songs as well, such as It's Beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and I think his version of Ave Maria beats everyone elses.

Hmm - a tricky one...

First of all I like Christmas Carols - I think 'Once in Royal Davids City' and 'It came upon the midnight clear' are lovely.

Then I like the Chrsitmas Classic songs from the movies e.g. 'Have yourself a merry lttle Christmas', sung by Judy Garland

Then I love the Phil Spector Xmas Album with his 'Wall of Sound' approach to Christmas songs.

Then there is the more recent pop stuff. e, Maria Carey and 'All I want for Xmas is you' which recaptures that Wall of Sound so well.

Oh yes - what about Nat King Cole singing 'The Happiest Tree'!! And 'The Christmas Waltz' by the Carpenters

Hi All

'In The Bleak Midwinter' is a gorgeous carol, Robert, I agree.

Pop wise - Perry Como sang 'Christmas Dream' on the soundtrack to a film called ' The Odessa File', I love this song.

As a child I was nutty about Jim Reeves singing ' Dear Senor Santa Claus', so I suppose this would be my all time favourite Xmas tune as it brings back so many happy memories of the thrill of the Season.
:)

There are a lot of great Christmas Songs about--I am quite a tradionalist in this--and although I know that these songs have been mentioned before, as far as I am concerned Christmas would not be the same , if I did not hear --"Have yourself a merry little Christmas" by Johnny Mathis--and "The Christmas Song" [aka "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire"]
written and song by Mel Torme.

My very favourite Christmas Carol, is "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem"--but I really only like the traditional version that I sang it school.

Ahh - you're right Marian, 'Little town of Bethlehem' has to be sung to a accompaniment of recorders!

For a Christmas party, I do like Brenda Lee singing 'Rocking around the Christmas Tree' ! Oh, and Andy Williams singing 'The most wonderful time of the year'!!

I'm an IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER fan too, but I also like IT CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR, as well as others, but I think the Bleak Midwinter really gives a feeling of this time of year.

Marian
P.S. It's a bit bleak on the forum today too. Where is everyone? Out in the rain??
