Research

Post by Michele Monro » Mon Dec 04, 2006 11:12 am

I am trying to find out some information on two schools that might not even exist anymore. One of you might live near there and be able to offer some information.

The first is Duncombe Road School in London. I would assume it has to be in the east end of London.

The other is Leopold Lane (Boys) School in Linslade, near Leighton Buzzard.

You might think of a way for me to find out whether they still exist, and if not what they are now

Thanks

Michele, don't know if this will be of help but if the Duncombe Road School was the Holloway Road area, the G.L.C. cleared the Fairfields Road and St Johns Way area in the early Sixties where Duncombe Road School was. So was also possibly demolished.

Michele, Found a reference to Duncombe Road School from the war years - It states " Admission Register for National School at Lelant in September 1941 lists 28 names and details of evacuee pupils admitted to the National school when it merged with Duncombe Road School, London N19."
There is also a website called Batchmates, where Duncombe Road School is listed, where you can fill in form to get in touch with old classmates etc.
Don't know if either of these will give any help in your search.
There is a Duncombe Primary school in Sussex Way, Marlborough Road, London N19 4JA but I don't know if this has any connection. Also a R/C Girls school in Holland Walk, Duncombe Road, N19 3EU.

Marian.

Hi Michele

According to Don Black in a BBC Radio 2 programme (Matt Monro: Tribute to a Song Stylist) broadcast on February 7 1995, the Duncome Road (Junior) School that your dad went to was actually in Highgate.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Don Black is as usual incorrect. The school that my father went to was

Duncombe Road School
Dunclome Road
Holloway

and the other is

Leopold Road Boys School
Leopold Road
Leighton Buzzard

I have been able to find several things out on Leopold because there is a newer school on top of that site but sadly they don't have the records and don't know where they went. I also need to track down a photo of how each schhol looked in those days.

I shall keep plodding, if anyone comes up with anything, please be sure to let me know.
Thanks as always

I've mentioned this, amongst others, in my earlier posting, Walking In Matt's Footsteps. That particular school - which is almost in the middle of a Council Estate - is now called Mount Carmel School For Girls. It was, in the late 1970's / early 80's, Archway Boys' School. Probably looks nothing like it was in Matt's day if it can be definitely confirmed as the school he went to.

No it is definately not the girls school, I have already rung them and the council and it was never called "Duncombe Road Boys School. I rather think it is the one in Holloway Road
