Yes Robert--that is true--people get older---they also change-and some are not the same people that you knew 10 years ago--and that is really disappointing.

Sorry to hear that you've not had a good time in Birmingham, Marian. Especially as I know you'd been looking forward to it. Hopefully the people on here make up for it a liitle bit - we'll try and cheer you up!

'Last Christmas' is not so much of a Christmas song, as a love song. As an 80s teenager, this song brings back many happy memories of college, and friends that I don't know any more. It tells a very evocative story, and is well written, but its not about the holidays, or deckin the halls etc. The video was great, and very Christmassy, so like Robert and Marian I rate this song. The arrangement is what makes it a Christmas song,with that catchy festive 'hook'.

I like a couple of ELVIS christmas songs, in particular MAMA LIKED THE ROSES, beautiful.

Hi Mike--thank you for your kind words---it certainly did help when I got back and logged on to the Forum--spent ages catching up on everyones posts, but it was worth it, as I felt much better afterwards.

Another more modern "Christmas" song that I like is "Driving Home for Christmas"--I thiink it was Chris Rea sang it originally, but I also have Michael Ball singing it too.

Every christmas without fail I always get out my Perry Como Irish Xmas video, even though he wasn't at his best when he filmed this in the nineties, it is a joy to watch and a must have for his fans.

Ken Bruce played the Chris Rea Christmas song on Monday. Actually Barry Manilow chose it as the tracks of his years. It was the first time I heard this song. Barry's choosing some good Christmas songs. On Tuesday, he played a version of Frank Sinatra's Christmas Waltz I hadn't heard before. I'm used to the version with the choir at the beginning and end. It's one of my favourite Christmas songs and so many people don't know it.

Right now I'm listening to Ken Bruce is playing Last Christmas by Wham! That song does go on and on. Perhaps that's my problem with it ... I can't really get the song structure. I like the jingle bells the best. Hopefully the Crazy Frog will keep them in.

Chris Rea is a local hero where I can from! He is Middlesbrough born and bred

Of course it was in Yorkshire, before it was 'moved' to Cleveland in 1974

Totally with you on 'Driving home for Christmas' Marian44 - its a journey I have done many times, and his line 'top to toe in tailbacks, I've got red lights all around' certainly strikes a chord!

Yes, you picked a great song there Marian in Driving Home for Christams.
Personally, I don't have any favourite Christams song really. I just like pretty much any of the Christmas songs by Nat King Cole, Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis, Bing Crosby, The Carpenters or Elvis.
If I was really pushed to make a choice it would have to be between Nat King Cole's O Tannenbaum and O Holy Night or Andy Williams' It's the most wonderful time of the year as they were the songs i used to like as a child.
I agree with you Marian - I too like the Michael Ball version of Driving Home for Christmas. He does a very nice version of Holy Night as well.

Another one of my favourite Christmas songs, because it always sounds so jolly, is "Sleigh Ride" and my favourite version is by The Carpenters---although I really like Johnny Mathis sing it, too.

I love Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson in the original instrumental setting.

I finally played Mary's Boy Child by Matt Monro yesterday. I love it ... probably not as much as Boney M's version, but it's great. Matt Monro is a master a slightly modifying the melody and even improving it. Very few artists can do this. I also like the semi-disco arrangement, which fits with the date of recording (1977). Which leads me to this question: Did Matt Monro record any disco records?

Andy Williams also made a nice version of Mary's Boy Child. and Brook Benton recorded one or twol Christmas favourites "You're All I Want For Christmas" and "When A Child Is Born"
