what are you listening to
Hi all, does anyone out there in Matt land have any information on a singer called Jerry Vale ,i ve just bought a 3 cd set of him singing in the 50 s and early 60 s, lovely songs beautifully sung .One in particular i think its called "Old Cape Cod" has a gorgious melody and has the feel of a song Matt might sing although im quite sure he never.Mr Vale definately has shades of Eddy Fisher in his voice but with a much smoother delivery, yet my dad who was a big Fisher fan has never heard of Jerry Vale so he probably never made it big over here ,any info on him would be great
PS does anyone else feel Ronnie Hilton had one of the best voices among British pop singers of the 50 s,though it must be said there were a great number of classy singers back then ,but none of the ones i ve heard compare to Mr Monro-definately a class apart

Yes Derek, we have mentioned both those "great" singers Jerry Vale and Ronnie Hilton many times on these pages over the past few months or so. Jerry was an Italian/American, whereas Ronnie was from East Yorkshire, but lived in the Leeds area. Jerry never really made it on these shores, but was a big star over the pond.

Derek - I wrote about Jerry Vale in the "What's in your ipod, CD player, etc." section. Since he's Italian American, I always listen to him during Columbus Day week-end.
I feel he is so much better than Eddie Fisher. Some in the forum may not agree with me. Jerry Vale was very popular in the US during the 1950s and 1960s. I highly recommend his Live From Carnegie Hall CD. He has many CDs on HMV's website, so I assume he was somewhat popular in the UK, even though he had no top 40 singles.

John, that is one of my very favourite cd's. I also have a dvd called "Music, music, music" with several of those tracks on-including the duet with Ella. And on another dvd I have the duet with Perry Como.
I love to watch them, especially as I believe "Music, music, music" was the last show that The Carpenters did. I really wish that Karen had sung "Rainbow Connection" on the dvd, as I love that song, and Karen's version is the best ever!!!
And going back to your previous posting of Des O'Connor---"I Pretend" was a big favourite of George and me. We often played it in the car--on a made-up compilation tape.

Hi John-I have to say that my very favourite song from the "Music, music music " dvd is Karen singing "Knowing when to leave "--I think she has recorded it as part of a medley, but this is the only time she sings the whole song. It is a little known Bacharach song--but I think it ranks up there with the best. I also have a good version by Helen Reddy, but apart from these 2 I cannot think of anyone else who has recorded this song---maybe Dionne Warwick.
