A nice selection there Sheila.
We particularly like John Barrowman's Broadway songs. Thanks to Marian who sent us these.
I think we must have Al Bowlly's entire discography. Great singer, died tragically young in an air raid during the blitz.

Yeah, I like all of John Barrowman's stuff. Do you also have John Barrowman Swings Cole Porter?

As for Al and co, I listened exclusively to 1930's music throughout the 1980's and have also got at least 99% of Al's output, plus much more by all the big names in British Dance Band scene of those times. I was a bit of a 1930's addict then with my home furnished in the 30's style and dressed the part too

We are learning some fascinating facts about you Sheila-I would have loved to see you in the 1980's, dressed in 1930's clothes.

Yes I have John Barrowman Swings Cole Porter.

We ised to have a lot of Edward Woodward---a long time ago--on vinyl---no idea where it is now--but he did have a very unique voice.

It looks like you are the same as us--we all love Matt--but have lots of other singers in our collections too !

Hah, I wish I could still get into those clothes. :D I've transfered all my L.Ps to MP3s and got them on disc and on my hard drive. Write to me privately if you would like the Edward Woodward stuff again.

We have John Barrowmans Cole Porter, thanks to Marian and an Edward Woodward LP. we are also big fans of the "British Dance Bands".
They have a very vibrant and knowledgeable group on the internet Sheila.

Yeah, I used to belong to that Yahoo group. I also used to belong to the Al Bowlly Circle. I used to get the little Memory Lane magazine that was produced. I still have a lot of them and I really should subscribe again! (My kids are older now, so it's time for me to indulge in my hobbies again.)

Those little books are chock full of interesting stuff about the dance band days. I went to a couple of the Memory Lane parties in the 1980's held at the Bonnington Hotel in London. I managed to meet quite a few of the band members who were by then elderly gents. Sadly, most of them are now playing it sometimes sweet and sometimes hot in the great dance hall in the sky.

You might like to visit http://www.memorylane.org.uk/al_bowlly_publications.htm

The best event was held at the South African Embassy in April 1991, to commemorate 50 years since Al was killed in an air raid.

(Apologies, if I'm repeating stuff you already have discussed here)

It was at that event I met Alan Dell who used to do the Radio 2 Dance Band days. He and his wife were very nice and we had a lovely chat. Shame he is no longer with us too.

I have very happy memories of those events and still have the photos somewhere!

Some nice stories Sheila. They still have their organised walks . We also have the "Memory Lane "magazine, and loved Alan Dell's programmes.
He made a fantastic contribution to the BBC, and even did a stint on Pick Of The Pops.
We still have Malcolm Laycock playing this music on Sunday evening and of course Malcolm is the honoury president of the Sinatra Music Society.

I can always be sure that Lena and Harry know what I'm rambling on about! :D Yeah, I hadn't forgotten Malcolm Laycock, he's carrying on the tradition and has been for quite a while now. Of course we don't have to listen on the same night that it goes out now with that marvellous thing the "listen again" facility :) This is great, as I can now listen when I'm free to! A marvellous boon, when your running a house with a large number of humans in it who seem to demand ones undivided attention for the best part of the day. Ah what bliss the "I player" is after all are asleep! :P Listen again...or as in my case listen for the first time.

I have to say that I think Michael Feinstein is greatly under -rated.
