Yes Harry and Lena--you bought back memories to me too. The trouble is in those days you could arrive halfway through the main film, with no idea of what is going on---then sit through the news, the cartoons, the "B" movie, before the film started again, so that you could then watch the beginning of the film and try to make sense of it !! Of course you could always stay and see the 2nd half again. I think some would be surprised that you would have to queue up outside---and queue up again inside till some seats were available !! I have to say it sounds crazy now---but of course nobody had a TV then!!

My Mum , my sister and I went regularly 3 times every week--to the Savoy, the Odeon, and the Gaumont--because they always had a different film on, and they changed every Monday. So as you can imagine--we saw lots and lots of films---especially if you include the " B " movies.

Sunday afternoon, they would always show a really old film, and I would go then with my friend---this was after I got too "Grown-up" to go to Saturday Morning Pictures at 6d a go !!

Just bought Peter O Toole's Venus.
He was nominated for best actor and I wanted him to win. To me, he will always be Lawrence Of Arabia.

Watched Hannibal Rising on DVD tonight. Creepy and atmospheric. Great performance by Gong Li.

Especially for John who loves a good scare, don't miss The Messengers. It's directed by the Pang brothers from Hong Kong and it's their Hollywood debut. It is really effective in making me jump many times and the horror aspect is wellcrafted.

I will have to keep a look out for this one Terence. Watched Hide and Seek last night with Robert de Nero, that was good.

I've seen Hide & Seek John, it got slated by the critics, but I didn't think it was too bad.
Glad you enjoyed Apocalypto Terence, though the story was slight, I was really taken by the energy of the thing. Gruesome, wasn't it?

I have to say that if I had the choice, I would rather watch Robert's dvd, than any of Terence's or John's or Gray's.

Yes that applies to me Marian. Harry likes both kinds of movies, although we don't really watch that many, but this one looks good Robert, headed with Frances Langford and Bing.
Dinah Shore was another popular vocalist.
We see that it also has interviews

Yes L&H, it does contain interviews, but I haven't watched the "extras" yet. The main person in the DVD is of course Bob Hope, who founded the "entertainment troupe". Dinah Shore is very very young, but sings beautifully 8)

Hi All, you've made me smile with your comments regarding the thrillers I've been watching of late :)

Please don't think I survive purely on a diet of chills and spills, I love all genre's!
Last week I watched Jane Eyre with Orson Welles: it was magnificent :)

Finally sat down to watch VENUS. Peter O Toole's acting should have won him the Oscar as he showed off his acting chops magnificently. Vanessa Redgrave in a mere 3 scenes almost stole the show as his wife. However the object of his affection in this film is an obnoxious and not a particularly beautiful girl. What does he see in her?

You will probably all laugh at this but last night we watched one of our favourite Carry On films, "Don't Lose Your Head". I can watch these films over and over again and always laugh at them. They just don't make 'em like that anymore!

Isn't that the one with the immortal line from Kenneth Williams-

"Infamy, Infamy---they've all got it in for me"

Hi Marian & John

Isn't 'Don't lose your head' 'The Black Fingernail' French Revolution one.
If it is, it is one of my favourites of the Carry On Series, the one gag I remember from the movie is Joan Sims burping after sipping champagne and Kennth Williams pulling a face in disgust.
Joan Sims: "I can't help it, it's the bubbles, they get lodged in me chest"
Kenneth Williams: "Hmm, with a chest like that you've room for a few lodgers"
:)
Hope I haven't offended anyone, but I really did laugh so hard when I was a kid at that joke, it's stayed in my memory!

:)
