We remember being in the cinema watching "That's entertainment " there was a young man sitting in front of us practically in hysterics at the sight of duo Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Mac Donald, and Esther diving in to the waterfall, smiling and holding her breath under water... longer than Sinatra was said to have done , not all three at once though. but all done in the studio. Brilliant

We watched 'That's Entertainment' at the weekend, it was on BBC1 the week before so I taped it.
Also watched 'Notes on a Scandal' with Judi Dench & Cate Blanchet.
Really well played, but very difficult to watch.

Watched one of my favourite Bond film this weekend - - the much maligned 'On Her Majestys Secret Service'  . Unique for many reasons - it didn't have a sung begining or end theme, featured George Lazenby alongside the marvellous Diana Rigg, had 'flashbabcks' to earlier adventures, stuck closely to the book and had the saddest ending of a Bond movie  . Of course, it also featured the beautiful love song 'All the time in the world' as well as as an annoying Christmas song called 'Do you know how Christmas Trees are grown'! Needless to say I am now trying to find this track on i-tunes!

For some reason we also watched the 1980s 'classic' 'Mannequin' - - part of a whole genre of fantasy films from that era e.g. 'Big', 'Splash', the clothes and sounds have not stood the test of time that well - apart from Starship singing 'Nothings gonna stop us now'!

Went to the "proper" cinema today to see "Diehard 4" with my son who wanted to see it and had no one to go with.
No chance of a nap during this exciting, all action thriller. Actually it was quite good.

Mike

OHMSS is my favourite Bond along with Goldfinger.
It's a fast paced yarn that seems to have 4 endings, each one bigger than the last.
Quite brilliant, I think.

Marian, I nearly went to see Die Hard 4 at the weekend, but was just too jiggered after i'd got the kids to bed.
Will hopefully catch it sometime. :)

Bruce Willis (or John McClain) is really James Bond with blood. He always pulls through, and the good guys win. Hope I haven't spoiled it for you Gray! I think his number is even 00707, or something like that. Great special effects in this film though.

OHMSS is great because it sticks close to the book, as did my other fave Bond - 'From Russia with love'. Both of these relied less on the gadgets - the only gadget in OHMSS is a 'portable' safe cracker and photo-copier (portable meaning they have to be lifted in by crane! ). George Lazenby's acting was panned by the critics, but his portrayal of Bond is true to the books, and his performance in the closing scene where his newly wed wife is killed is very touching

Have you read any of the books Gray? They are very dated now, kind of Biggles for grown ups! great fun to read! There is a new one due out, by a contemporary author, supposed to be in the same sort of style

I loved 'Goldfinger' too, and also 'Young only live twice', which I think is a stunningly shot film - a real work of art. :D

Marian - glad you enjoyed the 'Die Hard' film - they are usually pretty entertaining - how many vests must he get through?!

We live not far from where Ian Fleming once lived in Nettlebed, Oxon.
It is now a hospice, but I had a conducted tour once when I was training as a nurse, and we were shown Lady Fleming's bathroom etc.. and the rooms they once occupied. It was very interesting. :D :D

Zodiac

Post by Terence Lee » Fri Jul 27, 2007 2:08 am

Sat through 157 minutes of Zodiac, based on a true story of a serial killer and the intense manhunt he inspired. It's riveting and superbly crafted. Then suddenly, when it is time to get answers, the film ends abruptly with a series of statements that are so small I have to practically stand in front of the TV to read. Still, it is a fascinating watch.

Terence

I recently saw Zodiac in the cinema and enjoyed it, though it was perhaps a bit too long. Did you notice the Johnny Mathis track being played in one scene? The CD soundtrack is in the shops and I may buy it as I also liked some of the other songs featured.
