Hi Gray

Pretty Polly is one of my favourite Matt recordings. Love the long phrase at the end. Brilliant.

Hi Paul

Len and my favourite is"Over the Rainbow" which is on his disc last disc to be released Matt at the Movies. Each note is absolutely perfect as usual.

Hi Jon

Yes, the last phrase, wonderful, isn't it?

I have just realised that 'Pretty Polly' was released as a 'B' side to 'Release Me' in 1967.
That's the same year as Engelbert Humperdinck charted with 'Release Me'.

Another song I have been listening to quite a lot recently is 'I Am'.
Again, I am tranfixed by the emotion Matt shows in his rendition.
I also love the strings on this song.

Hi All

Does anyone know if there is a stereo version of Pretty Polly please?
If ever a mono track cries out for stereo reproduction it's this one!

There is a stereo version yes - released on a US compilation. The Stereo tape is once again in the US archive and not in the UK. It is something i shall once agian be pushing for when we get to the Singles set.

Wow, thank you Richard, I hope that I will be able to hear those wonderful strings reverberate in stereo one day. :)

 I'm embarrassed to say that I never knew the real difference between mono and stereo. But could this explain why my vinyl LP (album) of This Is The Life sounds different (and almost better) than my CD version?

Paul

Want to do a trade?
I'll give you my wife, kids, house, car and ticket for the next Leeds Utd game for your stereo version of 'This Is The Life'? :)

(Only joking, you can't have the ticket) :)

Not an easy thing to explain. To me it's like the difference between Colour and Black & White

Put in simple terms Stereo is where sound comes from two speakers and when sound from each speaker is different in it's content. Stereo also conveys space where mono cannot.

For instance: If you were to sit in front of a real orchestra you would not hear exactly the same thing in both ears. If recorded properly in stereo you would get more or less the same effect.

Maybe you wanted to give the effect of someone walking across a room during a radio play. This is easy in stereo as they can go from the left speaker to the right - with mono how could you tell? you could tell someone was moving about but not where.

Stereo I often find can bring music to life. The sound has more room to move. You have a 180 degree area in which you can place the sounds.

"This is the life" in stereo has a fantastic big band sound - recorded in stereo this leaps out at you - in mono it sounds flat.

Listen on a pair of headphone to a song you have both in mono and stereo and you'll soon see the difference.

I only really appeciated the true offect of stereo, when I was listening to a cd single of "Shooting Star" by Dollar---you could hear the shooting star, go over your head, from one end of the room to the other [which is where my speakers were]--it really was amazing..

I've thought of another analogy Think of mono as 2 dimensional and stereo as 3 dimensional

Richard

I went with friends to see 'U2 3D' on the giant Imax screen at Bradford last night.
The 5.1 surround sound was awesome, if the camera was on the stage with the band, the sound was mixed to represent band members who might be behind you at that moment, their vocal's changed to either the rear left or rear right channels.

I listened a lot to 'Pretty Polly' yesterday on my i-pod, it really is a lovely song, but I so hope I get to hear it in stereo one day.
It's the strings, they are crying out to be let loose across to sound stages! :)

This song has such sweet lyrics too, I really do like this song! :)
